Beyonce and Sweden
The June 15, 2023 edition of the Morning Brew had an interesting article about the surprising cause of Sweden’s high inflation rate. It turns out it was Beyonce!!! Let me explain.
The music superstar began her Renaissance tour in Stockholm attracting over eighty-thousand fans. Never one to miss an opportunity, the local hotels and restaurants all raised their prices to such a level it impacted the entire nation’s economy.
Referring to Beyonce’s popularity and her subsequent economic impact, Michael Graham, Danske Bank’s chief economist in Sweden, said, “It’s quite astonishing for a single event. We haven’t seen this before.”
Tom Cruise and Hollywood
At the 2023 Oscar nominees luncheon, legendary Hollywood producer and director Steven Spielberg was filmed telling actor Tom Cruise, “You saved Hollywood’s *&% and you might have saved theatrical distribution. Seriously, Top Gun: Maverick might have saved the entire theatrical industry.”
The film grossed $719 million domestically, the fifth most in U.S. history.

Jim Harbaugh
From 2008-2014, the University of Michigan football team had a combined record of 46-42 (52%) under head coaches Rich Rodriguez and Brady Hoke. This once-proud program had reached all-time lows in morale and fan attendance.
Enter former Michigan quarterback and new head coach Jim Harbaugh. Since his hiring, Michigan has a 74-25 record (74.7%) with consecutive wins against hated rival Ohio State. Better yet, Harbaugh has twice led the team to the college football playoffs.
Michael Jackson and MTV
In the November 15, 2011 edition of the USA Today, Craig Marks and Rob Tannenbaum, authors of I Want MY MTV: The Uncensored Story of the Music Video Revolution which chronicles the channel’s first thirty years, were interviewed.
In an interesting admission, Tannenbaum states, “Michael Jackson is the man who saved MTV…Jackson starts making videos for Thriller in 1982, and at that point, MTV is probably three bad months away from being shut down.”
The #1 Answer To Every Problem In Your Organization
What do Beyonce, Tom Cruise, Jim Harbaugh, and Michael Jackson have in common and what do they collectively teach us about leadership?
The answer to every organization’s problem is A PERSON.
There are leaders reading this post today who need to have a problem solved. Something is preventing your organization from going to the next level. You need a breakthrough.
If this describes your organization, you should either assign the problem to the right person already on your team or go get that individual! This one decision will enable you to achieve more in the near future than all the years of workarounds you have already invested in, which have caused you significant frustration and missed opportunities.
A Cautionary Tale
Conversely, selecting the wrong person can have drastic consequences. The same June 15, 2023 edition of the Morning Brew also reported that Modelo Especial surpassed Bud Light as the top-selling beer in the United States. This is significant because for the first time in two decades Bud Light did not hold the top position. Why?
The Wall Street Journal reported the backlash from trans influencer Dylan Mulvaney’s April 1st Instagram post accelerated the advancements Mexican beer were already making. Bud Light had a market share of 10% prior to the post. As of June 15th, their market share was 7.3%.
John Maxwell was right. Everything really does rise and fall on leadership. Make sure your organization selects the right one.
