An Uncomfortable Truth
I had a leadership epiphany this past weekend. It is well-known leadership truth that no one cares how much you know until they know how much you care. But an uncomfortable follow-up leadership truth is that once we know how much you care, we then care deeply how much you know. The success of the organization and its team members depend on it.
We have all heard someone say, “This isn’t personal, it’s business.” Well, I have two thoughts. First, it is always personal.
Second, what that person is communicating is, “We know you are a nice person. We know how much you care about your teammates and the organization. Unfortunately, your level of care is exceeded by your non-performance and neglect.”
Caring is a good place to start for a leader. But it is competence which sustains caring leadership.
