I am currently reading Greg Harden’s new best-selling book Stay Sane In An Insane World: How To Control The Controllables And Thrive. You may not know who Harden is but you certainly know the people he has influenced.
Harden is a Peak Performance Coach for the University of Michigan. During his tenure, Harden has coached 400 professional athletes, 50 NFL first-round drafts picks, and 120 Olympians. Included are people like 7-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady, Heisman Trophy winners Desmond Howard and Charles Woodson, and 23-time Olympic swimming champion Michael Phelps.

For a deeper dive into the leadership of Tom Brady read 24 Leadership Quotes And Lessons From Tom Brady aka The G.O.A.T..

On pages 7 through 10, Harden identifies the following three unique traits of the biggest stars and highest level performers:
They Are Coachable
The biggest stars and highest level performers are:
- Hungry for input.
- Hungry for information.
- Hungry to learn.
A Belief In The Process Of Self-Improvement
Harden writes the biggest stars and highest level performers:
- Commit – They make a conscious decision to pay the price needed to make themselves better.
- Improve – They then do the hard work needed to improve performance “in EVERYTHING” they do.
- Maintain – Those who achieve the greatest success maintain this new level of performance for extended periods of time.
They Have An Edge
Harden describes this as an extra gear. It is the ability to achieve greatness when greatness is the minimum amount required for success. Harden says athletes like Brady, Howard, Woodson, and Phelps take their performance to an even higher level for the following reasons:
- Because they have to.
- Because circumstances require it.
- Because it’s the only way to win.
I look forward to finishing Harden’s book. You can purchase your copies by clicking HERE or on the image provided.
After reading the first few chapters I had to ask myself, “Am I coachable? Do I deeply believe in self-improvement? And do I have an edge, that extra gear?” I think so but am interested to finishing the book and learning how I can enhance those skills. Why don’t you join me in answering this question?
