A Leading Pastor And Coach

Tom Mullins is the founding pastor of Christ Fellowship Church in Palm Beach Gardens, FL.  Prior to leading one of America’s greatest churches, Coach Mullins was a very successful high school and college football coach.  Even as a pastor, he is still called Coach Mullins to this very day.  I had the opportunity to be part of a group of approximately thirty individuals who were privileged to receive special instruction from this amazing leader.  Coach Mullins concluded our time by sharing what he has learned that allows leaders to truly make a difference and stand out from all others.

A Summer Of Learning

While coaching Georgetown College (KY) in 1977, Coach Mullins arranged for his coaching staff to join him in spending several days at the training camps of the Ohio State Buckeyes and Cincinnati Bengals.  They witnessed everything these elite programs did from drills to strength and conditioning to nutrition to practice schedules.  Afterward, Coach Mullins and his staff began to download what they learned and figured out how they could best apply those lessons to their own team.

Coaches Mullins said, “We were doing the same things they (Ohio State and Cincinnati) were doing.  The differences were they were bigger and stronger than we were and they executed the fundamentals more consistently and at an elite level.”  He then concluded with the primary lesson for all leaders to apply, “It’s all about the consistency of the execution of the fundamentals which make us stand out.”

Leadership Lessons

From Coach Mullins’s experience, we learn a couple of leadership lessons.  For the most part, all leaders have access to the same information.  But the best leaders take that information and create an individualized training plan to get better.  But most importantly, the difference between professionals and amateurs, regardless of your profession, is the consistent execution of the fundamentals of their craft.

Do you want to truly make a difference as a leader and stand out from all others?  I’m sure you do which is why you are reading this book.  Then make a commitment right now to consistently execute the fundamentals of your craft at the highest level possible.  This will help you become Mighty.
