The Man Responsible for Starting Veterans Day

One man can truly make a difference.  One such man was Alvin King.

On November 11, 1918 a truce was between the Germans and Allies basically ending WWI.  One year later, the first Armistace Day was celebrated.  However, after the World War II and Korean Wars, a shoe repairman from Emporia, Kansas named Alvin King felt all veterans should be honored.  He then formed a committee and the town celebrated the first Veterans Day in 1953.

Emporia’s congressman Ed Rees loved the holiday concept and took the idea to Washington D.C.  On year later, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a bill changing Armistace Day to Veterans Day.  King was in attendance when the bill was signed.

If you do not think you can make a difference, I hope King’s story inspires you to take action.
