A Good Leader’s Biggest Virtue

There are many virtues a leader can have.  The following is just a short list:

  • Honesty
  • Respect
  • Courage
  • Forgiveness
  • Kindness
  • Temperance
  • Modesty
  • Justice
  • Love
  • Gratitude
  • and I could go on and on.

As a leader, I am having so much fun watching the UEFA European Championship in soccer.  I am mesmerized by the passion, high stakes, and sheer drama that every match seems to generate.  Such a moment took place this past Sunday with Spain trailing Georgia 1-0.  With Georgia having the lead and momentum at the 31-minute mark, Spain’s superstar midfielder Rodrigo Cascante, better known as Rodri, exerted his influence.

Holding the ball at midfield, Rodri motioned with his hands for everyone for everyone to calm down and then reset the team’s offense.  Seven minutes later, he scored the tying goal which you can see below.  Leading by example, Rodri propelled the team forward to an eventual 4-1 victory.  That’s what superstars do.

Prior to their game against Croatia two weeks earlier, Rodri said, “The biggest virtue a leader must have is to remain calm when there’s a heavy storm, trying to guide the team and show them the light when your team-mates struggle to find the right option. This is a good leader.”

In addition to the virtues mentioned above, a good leader remains calm during heavy storms.  Per Rodri’s comments, the virtue of calmness does three things:

  1. Calmness allows you to properly guide the team.
  2. Calmness provides clear direction during times of struggle.
  3. Calmness gives you options and solutions.

If you are having a difficult time as a leader, remain calm.  It will provide your team a sense of security and help them navigate the storms they are in.
