The United States Olympic men’s basketball team began its practice schedule this past weekend. This team is loaded. In fact, head coach Steve Kerr says the team is made up of 12 Hall of Famers. Some of the players include LeBron James, Steph Curry, Joel Embiid, Kevin Durant, and recent world champions Jayson Tatum and Jrue Holiday.
But the player impressing me most is Anthony Edwards. The reason why is hidden from most people. It takes place away from the public eye. What impresses most about Edwards is not his superlative athletic ability or dunking skills, it is the lonely work he puts in when no one is watching.

What you just watched is Edwards being the last USA player to leave practice. You also witnessed arguably the best young player in the world relentlessly working on the fundamentals of shooting. Even though he made 18 3-pointers in a row, he continues working hard to perfect this skill.
Kobe Bryant was once asked why he, the best player in the world at the time, worked so hard on the fundamentals of the game like dribbling and footwork. His response was, “It’s because I work so hard on the fundamentals that I’m the best player in the world.”
Whether you are in ministry, sales, education, athletics, business, or serve in the non-profit space, if you wish to achieve your full potential, you must relentlessly work on the fundamentals of your craft. You must master the basics.
