8 Facts About Playmakers – Those People Who Truly Make A Difference

ESPN’s Ryan Clark said during the December 11, 2023, edition of First Take that the first thing coaches tell players is to know their alignment and assignment, know where to line up and know what to do.

I thought a lot about Clark’s statement today during NorthStar Church senior pastor Mike Linch’s sermon called “Playmakers.”  The message was about volunteerism and how to get involved at the church but he made some incredible insights about the coaching profession and leadership in general.

I felt Mike’s comments were so insightful I wanted to share them with you.

8 Leadership Quotes and Lessons on being a Playmaker

The following are eight leadership quotes and lessons on being a playmaker:

  1. “A Playmaker is someone who understands what they are supposed to do and they’re always in the right spot.”
  2. “Coaches are always on the lookout for people who can make a difference.”
  3. “The great ones are always looking for the next ones.”
  4. “You can’t watch a game without noticing those are in the right place at the right time.”
  5. “If you can be a playmaker, why wouldn’t you be?”
  6. “We (playmakers) don’t like to fail.”
  7. “Self-doubt kills athletes and our mission for God.  Self-doubt is a silent killer.”
  8. “We don’t have enough playmakers.”

Teams get in trouble when their people are not in the right place.  Furthermore, when your team is not where they are supposed to be and unclear about their responsibilities, it can cause significant frustration, even anger, in the lives of their leaders.  Leaders can combat this by properly training their teams on the fundamentals of their jobs and better equipping them for success.

***BONUS*** A Financial Difference-Maker

To show you the difference a Playmaker can make in an organization, I want discuss someone from an organization not normally talked about much in leadership circles – the WWE.  Specifically, I want to talk about their biggest star – former world champion Roman Reigns, whose real name is Joe Anoa’i.

On Saturday night, he made his long-awaited return to the ring at SummerSlam after a four-month hiatus.  From the moment his entrance music began during the main event until the last image of him on screen, Reigns was only on television for 5 minutes 51 seconds (2.5%) of their four-hour show.  But his impact was remarkable.

As shown in the image below, Reigns personally generated $800,000 in merchandise sales in the first two hours after his return.  In addition, all 1316 newly created Roman Reigns championship belts, the top-of-the-line model costing $600, sold out in an hour.  I would say he has found his right place on the team.

There is a difference between titles and influence.  Other people have the championship belts, but Reigns is clearly the company’s needle mover.

Playmakers don’t need titles.  They just need opportunities to make a difference.
