5 Qualities of a Transformational Leader

Earlier this month, I wrote the article Nick Saban’s 13 Thoughts on being a Transformational Leader vs. a Transactional Leader.  The content really struck a nerve with countless leaders.  I think this is because we all want our leadership to be transformational, not transactional.  To build on that article, I want to give you five qualities of a transformation leader.

This past Sunday, NorthStar Church’s associate pastor Drew Startup gave a wonderful message utilizing the following passage:

“Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind.” – I Peter 3:8 (ESV)

You can watch Drew’s message by clicking the image below.  Afterwards, I will give five qualities of a transformation leader I captured from his comments.

5 Qualities of a Transformational Leader

From this passage and Drew’s comments, the following are five qualities of a transformational leader:

1. A Focus on Unity

Transformational leaders understand the value of unity.  Unity is when your team is of one mind.  There is an absence of competing agendas.  Successful leaders want alignment and attunement in your organization .

  • Alignment is when everyone wants the same goal.
  • Attunement is when everyone is in agreement on how to get there.

It is possible to be aligned but not attuned.

2. Sympathy

This is when the leader feels genuine grief or sorrow for someone’s misfortune.  This quality allows leaders to understand the challenges of those they serve and bring solutions.

3. Love

Love is the greatest quality a leader can possess.  This quality allows leaders to put the interests of those they serve over their own.  Love is the greatest antidote to selfishness and self-serving leadership.

This quality is directly attached to sacrifice.  What are you personally willing to give up and pay a price for that benefits those you are called to serve?

4. Tenderhearted

Drew made a wonderful observation about this quality.  Being tenderhearted means there is a “deep gnawing in the stomach” that allows leaders to “touch wounds with delicacy.”

5. Humility

Humility flows from love.  Humility is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less.  It is thinking of others first.

Conclusion

Drew concluded his message by reminding everyone that these five qualities cannot be self-combusted.  As hard as we might try and even have some momentary success, these qualities are only possible through the Holy Spirit working through a leader’s life.
