An All-Time Winner
Periodically, you will hear someone described as “a winner.” That definition is usually attached to accomplishment and the person who achieved it. However, a deeper understanding of what “a winner” is goes much deeper.
Today, Fox Sports analyst, seven-time Super Bowl champion, and future Hall of Famer Tom Brady appeared on The Herd With Colin Cowherd. As part of an interview you can listen to by clicking here, Brady was asked about the Kansas City Chiefs and a perceived lack of offensive identity.
Brady took the question as an opportunity to deliver a masterclass on the attributes of a winner.
The following are three things winner do we glean from his comments:
Winners Clearly Define What Winning Looks Like
Winners are single-minded. They are not duplicitous in their objectives. Brady said, “The game is about winning. We talk about points, you talk about yards, and you talk about penalties and defensive stops. To me, at the end of the game, do you have more points than the other team? That’s the maturity of a great team and a great organization.”
Winners Expect, Plan For, and Manage Variables
A common leaders axiom is “Control what only you can control.” That statement is true. However, leadership is rarely linear, there are always variables. Therefore, the job of a leader is often to manage those uncontrollables.
Brady added, “The job of the quarterback is to manage all the variables of the game and the season, injuries, weather, the rhythm of the offense.”
Winners Put Themselves In Position To Win
Winners clearly define what winning looks like, then expect, plan for, and manage variables. By doing so, they put themselves in a position to win.
Brady concluded, “and then ultimately go out there and make the plays that put you in a position to win. And that’s what winners do”
Based upon these three items, would Tom Brady say you a winner?
