We all want to be part of a winning organization. That is pretty much a common sense statement, isn’t it. But what are the first steps we can to take to do so?
Let’s take a look at this past weekend’s NFL play-off games for some insight. I think you will notice a trend.
- The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Houston Texans 23-14. The Chiefs sacked Texans quarterback C.J Stroud 8 times. They also had 0 turnovers.
- The Washington Commanders defeated the Detroit Lions 45 – 31. The Lions had 5 turnovers, while the Commanders had none.
- The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Los Angeles Rams 28-22. The Rams had 2 turnovers, while the Eagles had none.
- The Buffalo Bills defeated the Baltimore Ravens 27-25. The Ravens had 3 turnovers, while the Bills had none.
Former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick was fond of saying, “To learn how to win, you must first learn how not to lose.”
I was reminded of Coach Belichick’s comments this past weekend. All four winning teams had zero turnovers. They did nothing to inhibit their chances of success. To further nail down this truth, Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels has more wins (two) during this year’s playoffs than negative plays.
Regardless of what industry you are in, the lesson is the same – To learn how to win, you must first learn how not to lose.
So what are some practical ways you can learn how not to lose in your leadership? Here are ten ideas any leader can implement:
- Avoid hasty decisions.
- Avoid reckless behavior.
- Install clear boundaries.
- Create accountability personally and throughout the organization.
- Collaborate with smart people.
- Continually grow.
- Listen.
- Practice fiscal responsibility.
- Make long-term decisions.
- Eat right and exercise.
These ten practices will help you avoid losing. Then you can focus on how best to win.
