5 Ways Organizations Should Address Their Leadership Challenges

Great teams go through transition periods, and it is in those moments that leadership becomes more important than ever.  Late last year, Real Madrid, a club synonymous with success, found itself in a season of change after losing veteran voices and welcoming new talents.  Yet, instead of looking backward, they focused on the future — developing the next generation of leaders from within.

How they did it is a masterclass for all organizations wanting to maintain high-performance during times of transition.

5 Ways Organizations Should Address Their Leadership Challenges

The following are five ways organizations should address their leadership challenges we learn from this legendary club:

1. Leadership Must Adapt to Change

Real Madrid’s struggles, including a November 27, 2024 2-0 loss to Liverpool, raised concerns about whether the club lacked vocal leadership.  Gone were experienced figures like Nacho Fernandez, Toni Kroos, and Joselu, leaving a void that had to be filled.  Even superstar Kylian Mbappé, despite his wealth of experience, was still adapting to life in a new country.  Transition is never easy, but true leadership thrives in adversity.

2. Culture Still Wins Championships

Despite concerns, the foundation of Madrid’s locker room remained strong.  Per this article, sources confirmed that team morale was still high, and players continued to support Carlo Ancelotti’s leadership.  When Vinicius Jr. and Federico Valverde embraced their coach after scoring goals, it was more than just a celebration — it was a sign of belief in his vision. The most successful teams do not just rely on tactics; they build a culture of trust, resilience, and accountability.  Madrid’s history of success is not just about talent — it is about a relentless commitment to excellence.

3. Different Leaders Emerged

Leadership is not a one-size-fits-all concept.  While Madrid lacked the traditional loud voices of past squads, leaders were stepping up in new ways:

  • Lucas Vázquez was a vocal leader.  He is one of the few who continues to raise his voice and unify teammates.
  • Luka Modrić leads through experience and professionalism, mentoring younger players behind the scenes.
  • Federico Valverde, despite being naturally reserved, has showed leadership on the pitch and even captained the team against Leganés.

As one dressing-room source put it: “I prefer a player like Valverde who transmits leadership on the pitch rather than just talk.”  True leaders lead by example, not just with words.

4. Accountability Must Be Put In Place

Real Madrid is also looking at long-term leadership solutions.  David Alaba is expected to bring stability upon his return from injury.  Antonio Rüdiger has taken on a mentoring role with younger players.  However, the standout name for the future is Jude Bellingham.  Though still adjusting to the language and culture, Bellingham consistently shows signs of elite leadership.  His blunt post-match assessment after the Liverpool loss — “They wanted it more” — and his play since has demonstrated his willingness to demand excellence.  His presence in press conferences also signals a readiness to step into a bigger role.

5. Focus on Growth, Not Nostalgia

With a lack of veteran voices, some suggested bringing back Sergio Ramos, an undisputed legend.  However, Madrid seems committed to allowing its young stars to grow into leadership roles instead of relying on past icons.  “It’s a process that needs time,” Ancelotti stated. The challenge?  At Real Madrid, time is always in short supply.  Success is demanded now, patience it always a scarce commodity, and the players must embrace leadership roles faster than ever before. The key was who be the one player who stepped up when the pressure is highest.  That person would be Bellingham.

Conclusion

Real Madrid did not panic.  They understood that leadership is forged through experience, adversity, and performance on the biggest stage.  While the voices may be different, the expectation remained the same: win, and win the right way.  Their young stars embraced the moment, and as a result, Madrid’s future should be just as golden as its past.
