Today I am being dispatched by Injoy Stewardship Solutions (ISS) to attend the Chick-Fil-A Leadercast. In an effort to grow in my skills to better add value to pastors and church leaders, I will be live blogging throughout.
The next speaker was Malcolm Gladwell, author of the great book David and Goliath. The following are his thoughts on Beyond You leadership:
- Deterrence is a form of leadership is the cost and benefits of following the rules. And if the cost of breaking the law outweigh the benefits, people will follow the rules.
- Americans are far and away the most honest taxpayers in the world.
- Legitimacy is the fundamental reason people follow leaders is they view the leadership as legitimate.
- The first part of legitimacy is respect.
- The second part is fairness.
- Fundamentally, we believe our tax system is legitimate.
- To be an effective leader, it matters not just what you say but how you say it. Process is important.
- When we look at people who disobey their leaders, the first question we should ask is not, “What is wrong with those people?” We should ask, “What is wrong with the leaders?” Responsibility begins at the top.
- Education is a contract between a child and the education system.
- Nothing good happens unless the leadership starts a conversation.
