16 Lessons On The Relationship Between Leadership And Creativity

The following are 16 lessons we learn about the relationship between leadership and creativity:

  1. Great leaders and smart artists know there is no creativity without creation.  You must actually get something done.  Other thoughts….
  2. Managers are primarily technicians.  Leaders are artists.
  3. Managers enjoy control.  Leaders enjoy creation.
  4. Artists still execute but they also have a need to entertain.
  5. Artists utilize their craft as a platform for self-expression.
  6. For artists, each day is a painting that they put their signature on.  When is the last time you looked at a day from that perspective?
  7. Artists thrive in environments of freedom.  Are you creating open space for those on your team to operate in?
  8. Artists are driven by passion.  I define passion as owning the result.
  9. Artists generally lack fear, specifically in the area of mistakes.
  10. Freedom has a price.  There are many things artists sacrifice when coloring outside the lines.
  11. The creation process is better when artists are surrounded by a great team.
  12. Artists often still have great responsibility.
  13. Creativity takes place when responsibility is not threatened.
  14. The best artists have paid the heavy price of the in-depth study of their craft.
  15. Instincts and preparation are inseparable during the creative process.
  16. Having freedom means you have more freedom to make mistakes.  You need a team to make up for them.

Author Tim Layden says “The beauty lies in the chances taken and the moments made.”  Leaders, when is the last time you made something beautiful?
