The Importance Of Foundations

During a recent bible study we are a part of, Chicago White Sox area scout Kevin Burrell made the following observations about why foundations are so important in life and leadership.  He said:

  1. A foundation has a load distribution.  It bears the entire load evenly.
  2. A foundation gives stability.  It anchors the building to the ground.
  3. A foundation is a moisture barrier.  A well-constructed foundation prevents water from seeping in.  It’s protection.
  4. Longevity.  A solid foundation ensures long-term durability.

A Builder Of A Winning Foundation

One leader who is hoping to help a long-suffering organization build a winning foundation is New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers.  For the first time in recent memory, the team is experiencing success and the former Super Bowl champion Rodgers is helping the team steward this opportunity.

In a news conference this past week, he said,  “I go back to this quote a lot, but Mike McCarthy said, our biggest struggle is going to be handling success back in 2006 in Green Bay.  And there’s a lot to that. I think, you know, it’s easier when you kind of get kicked in the teeth to kind of come together.  It’s us against the world.  It’s us against the big bad media who’s saying how bad we are, you know.  We can kind of come together.”

He continued, “But can you still come together and have the same approach when everybody’s kind of starting to sing your praises a little bit?  I think that’s the mark of a great team, is can you handle the success part with the same focus, the same mentality, the same mindset, the same energy when you’re starting to get on a little bit of a roll.”

4 Keys To Building A Winning Foundation

Rodgers gave us four keys to building a winning foundation:

  1. Winning focus.  You must eliminate distractions.
  2. Winning mentality.  You must have proper thinking.
  3. Winning mindset.  You must maintain a positive attitude.
  4. Winning energy.  You must bring a sense of urgency on a daily basis.

7 Things Which Will Kill A Winning Foundation

While Rodgers gave us keys to building a winning foundation, Kevin provided an alternative list.  He gave us a list of item which will kill your foundation.

The following are seven foundation killers:

  1. Lack of purpose or direction.
  2. Negative toxic relationships.
  3. Poor financial management.
  4. Not managing our time wisely.
  5. Fear of failure.
  6. Lack of self-control.
  7. Lack of patience.

Conclusion

As a leader, this is the next step you should take.  Read the two lists and see which one best describes your organization.  If you are currently experiencing less-than-desirable results, begin implementing Aaron’s thoughts and watch your fortunes change.
