The 5-Step Process to Finding Your Place in either Your Organization or the World

A Probing Question

I hear it asked a number of ways:

  • What is my purpose?
  • Why am I here?
  • What is my “Why?”
  • What is God’s will for my life?
  • How do you define success?

All of these questions have to do with someone who wants to find their place in this world.

If you are asking any of these questions in some form or fashion, I want to help you.

The following is a five-step process for finding your place in your organization or the world.  The lessons are contained in the acronym PLACE.

P – Passion

What do you laugh about, cry about, and dream about?  What is it that gets you out of bed each morning and what you are willing to own the result of?

L – Love

Who and what do you care about so deeply that you are willing to sacrifice for it?

A – Affirmed

What is it that people are telling you that you are good at?  Where is it that you are adding the most value?

C – Continual Improvement

Now that you have found something you are passionate about, love, and people tell you that you are good at, are you willing to be humble enough and put in the extra work to get even better?

E – Equip Others

Now that you have found something you are passionate about, love, and you are getting even better at, it is now time to invest in other people.  You have something of value which needs to be shared with others.  This is multiplication.

If you are doing these five things, you have likely found your place in the world and your organization.

BONUS

If you are looking for people to have a place on your team, PLACE works in the hiring process as well.  Here’s how:

  • P – Passion.  Are they willing to own the result?
  • L – Love.  Are they willing to sacrifice for your organization, their teammates, and the customers?
  • A – Affirmed.  Are their skills evident?  Do they have a proven track record of success?
  • C – Continual Improvement.  What is their personal growth strategy?
  • E – Equip Others.  Are they multiplying themselves?

If the answer to these questions is “Yes”, then they should have a PLACE on your team.
