What Leaders Must Desperately Cling To During Successful Times

You may not be familiar with a Florida bald eagle named Clive but you should. Per the October 28th edition of the online newsletter The Flyover, he spent the entire time riding out Hurricane Milton gripped to his nest.

As you will see in the video below, the eagle’s powerful vice-like claw hold on the branches allowed him to get through the storm.

There is an important application here to this video for leaders.

Today I was meeting with former head of the Kennesaw State Executive MBA program George Manners. In addition to being a dear friend, he has basically become my personal executive coach.

George and I discussed a leader who began as a very humble young man. But as he garnered more and more success, this leader became increasingly arrogant and entitled. Now in his 40s, he has become a caricature of himself and no longer in high demand.

It was then George said these profound words, “Cling to humility or success will overtake you.”

When he said those words I thought of the video above. For many leaders, success and all its trappings can come at you with the force of a hurricane. As your influence grows, you must cling to humility with the same amount of force as Clive the bald eagle clings to his nest during the hurricane.

All leaders will learn humility either by choosing it as a character quality…. or by humiliation.

The leader George and I discussed is learning humility through humiliation. You don’t have to. If you are having success, desperately cling to humility. By doing so, you are more likely to have less embarrassment and continued success.
