{"id":1913,"date":"2010-10-14T00:18:39","date_gmt":"2010-10-14T00:18:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/briandoddonleadership.com\/?p=1913"},"modified":"2012-06-13T19:20:21","modified_gmt":"2012-06-13T21:20:21","slug":"maybe-the-best-definition-of-leadership-ive-ever-heard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/briandoddonleadership.com\/2010\/10\/14\/maybe-the-best-definition-of-leadership-ive-ever-heard\/","title":{"rendered":"Maybe The Best Definition Of Leadership I’ve Ever Heard"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>How would you define the word “leadership”?\u00c2\u00a0 <\/strong>The most famous definition is\u00c2\u00a0from <a title=\"John Maxwell\" href=\"www.johnmaxwell.com\/\" target=\"_self\">John Maxwell<\/a> who says “Leadership is influence”.\u00c2\u00a0 John, of course, is right.<\/p>\n<p>However, today <strong>my pastor <a title=\"Dr. Crawford Loritts\" href=\"www.fbconline.org\/leadership\/loritts.asp\" target=\"_self\">Crawford Loritts <\/a>gave a definition that made me stop in my tracks.\u00c2\u00a0 Crawford gave this statement – “<em>The Heavy Responsibility Of Leadership Is That It Is A Destination Others Wish\u00c2\u00a0To Arrive<\/em>.”<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I have been thinking about those words\u00c2\u00a0all day.\u00c2\u00a0 When I look at the lives of other leaders, <strong>do I want to\u00c2\u00a0end\u00c2\u00a0up where they are?<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0 Let’s internalize it – as a leader, <strong>does your team members want to end up\u00c2\u00a0where you are?<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0 This is literally changing how I view the subject of\u00c2\u00a0leadership.<\/p>\n<p>Would others want to\u00c2\u00a0arrive\u00c2\u00a0where you are\u00c2\u00a0using this baker’s dozen\u00c2\u00a0of leadership as a barometer:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Compensation and Benefits<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 There is little doubt that most people on your team would want to arrive where you are\u00c2\u00a0in this area.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0However, what they must ask is are\u00c2\u00a0they willing to pay the price that you paid to get there?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Competence<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 Are you an expert in your craft?\u00c2\u00a0 If not, are you becoming one?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Character<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 Does your life reflect the core values your company most likely\u00c2\u00a0proudly displays?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Confidence<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 This comes from previous accomplishments, not from current circumstances.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Courage<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 Are you decisive and can you make\u00c2\u00a0difficult decisions?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Creativity<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 Can you find solutions where there are no obvious answers\u00c2\u00a0exist?\u00c2\u00a0 A follow-up question would be\u00c2\u00a0do you produce?\u00c2\u00a0 Creativity without creation\/production is simply\u00c2\u00a0brainstorming.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Influence<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 Do others follow you?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Respect<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 Do others admire you as a person?\u00c2\u00a0 This speaks to\u00c2\u00a0something beyond your accomplishments.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Relational Intelligence<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 Do you have people skills?\u00c2\u00a0 Do people enjoy being around you?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Quality of Family Life<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 Do I want to arrive at a leadership\u00c2\u00a0destination that requires me losing my\u00c2\u00a0family?\u00c2\u00a0 No.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Generosity<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 Do people see you as a person with an open hand or a closed fist?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Peace<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Do you\u00c2\u00a0provide your team a sense of security.\u00c2\u00a0 Do\u00c2\u00a0you trust\u00c2\u00a0your preparation or are\u00c2\u00a0you driven by knee-jerk reactions?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Spiritual Maturity<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 Do you have your priorities right?\u00c2\u00a0 While you want to maximize and be a great steward of everything you have been entrusted with, does your life reflect that you are focused on eternity?\u00c2\u00a0 Do you trust and love God more than anything?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Let me give you one more – <strong>Trust<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 Have you made\u00c2\u00a0wise and timely decisions over an extended period of time?<\/p>\n<p>Leaders, let me ask you to comment on this fundamental question – <strong>Do those on your team wish to arrive at where you are at in the 14 areas mentioned?<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0 This post will\u00c2\u00a0challenge me for months.<\/p>\n<p>To automatically receive\u00c2\u00a0future posts on leadership, simply subscribe or\u00c2\u00a0click <a title=\"RSS Feed\" href=\"https:\/\/briandoddonleadership.com\/feed\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How would you define the word “leadership”?\u00c2\u00a0 The most famous definition is\u00c2\u00a0from John Maxwell who says “Leadership is influence”.\u00c2\u00a0 John, of course, is right.
