Intentionally. Just like with anything else, if you want to win at it, be good at it, you\u2019ve got to work on it. So don\u2019t just let this be an article you read, but a set of actions you take. Are you ready?<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Improve Your Sermon Delivery: 5 Unexpected Steps<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3>1. Get your mind right before you arrive.<\/h3>\n<p>I am an advocate of having a pre-preaching routine. When I dialed this in, it was like a switch was flipped. Everything began to brighten up.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know what you\u2019ll need to do to get your mind right\u00a0<em>before<\/em> you arrive to your church\u2019s gathering space on Sunday, but it may include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Early morning prayer<\/li>\n<li>Reading the text multiple times through<\/li>\n<li>Listening or watching a sermon from another pastor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here\u2019s my full Sunday morning pre-preaching routine:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Sunday Morning Pre-Preaching Routine\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2H6SaFi1Xzk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>2. Stretch before you go on stage.<\/h3>\n<p>If your body isn\u2019t loose, you\u2019ll be stiff. (Profound, right?) But think about it, if you want to preach an engaging message and have the freedom to\u00a0<em>move<\/em>, then don\u2019t just get your mind and your spirit right before you preach, but also get your body right.<\/p>\n<p>I typically will go with these stretches (feel free to google them):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Chest stretch (pull your arms behind your back)<\/li>\n<li>Triceps stretch (pull your arm over your head, use your other arm to slowly stretch the other out)<\/li>\n<li>Shoulder stretch (if you played baseball, you know this one \u2013 put one arm across your chest and use the other to stretch it)<\/li>\n<li>Quad stretch (bend your leg at the knee and use your arm to stretch it)<\/li>\n<li>Hamstring stretch (touch your toes without bending your legs \u2013 or try)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here\u2019s the point: get loose!<\/p>\n<p>As I would tell my baseball teams when I coached,\u00a0<em>loosey goosey, loosey goosey<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Enjoy it.<\/h3>\n<p>I don\u2019t know about you, but if someone told me to\u00a0<em>go to your happy place<\/em>, one of the \u201cplaces\u201d I\u2019d go is preaching. I have a ton of fun delivering God\u2019s word.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, it\u2019s a lot of weight. But man, it\u2019s a blast.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a test. Ask your spouse or a close friend if you look like you enjoy it when you preach. They\u2019ll know you best and will be able to tell.<\/p>\n<p>When you enjoy preaching, your congregation will notice and it will make your sermons\u00a0<em>far<\/em> better.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Be you.<\/h3>\n<p>God doesn\u2019t want you to be your favorite preacher, He wants you to be you.<\/p>\n<p>After all\u2026<\/p>\n<p>He made you on purpose.<\/p>\n<p>If you have a dry sense of humor, take that to the pulpit. If you\u2019re an animated person, take that to the pulpit. Be you.<\/p>\n<p>For example, I\u2019ve got two modes. I can be super serious and focused and I can be super goofy and energetic. If you\u2019re familiar with the Enneagram, I\u2019m an <a href=\"http:\/\/personalitycafe.com\/type-8-forum-challenger\/39229-enneatype-8-wings.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">8 with a wing 7<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I take those two things with me to the pulpit.<\/p>\n<p>But unfortunately\u2026<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t always do this.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d often only be the super serious challenger and my sermons lacked flavor, personality, and, well, me.<\/p>\n<p>Want to know what helped me be me? I made it a point to enjoy preaching, to have fun, and to let my humor come through.<\/p>\n<p>So, be you. If you don\u2019t know who you are and how you\u2019re wired, the Enneagram is a great thing to dive into. Also, the Myers-Briggs is very helpful as well. You can do a free test at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.16personalities.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">16Personalities.com<\/a>\u00a0(<em>ENTJ<\/em>, represent!).<\/p>\n<h3>5. Preach as their pastor, not a conference speaker.<\/h3>\n<p>You don\u2019t have to be the most eloquent. You don\u2019t have to be the most polished.<\/p>\n<p>The thing that will make the most difference in your preaching is to make sure your congregation knows that you love them and care about them.<\/p>\n<p>Get to know them. Let them get to know you.<\/p>\n<p>Be real. Be vulnerable. Tell them about Jesus. A lot.<\/p>\n<p>They don\u2019t need another podcast preacher, YouTube preacher, or Instagram preacher, they need you to be their pastor.<\/p>\n<p>Walk with them. Love them.
