Characteristics Of Effective Innovation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>As a person who works with church leaders, I am often engaged in conversations about the subject of innovation<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 When most people discuss innovation, here is what they are usually referring to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Something New<\/li>\n<li>Something Visual<\/li>\n<li>Something Digital<\/li>\n<li>Something Cool – there is a subjective term<\/li>\n<li>Something That Young People Require<\/li>\n<li>Something Young People Need To Connect With The Heart Of God<\/li>\n<li>Something Needed To Keep Us Relevant To The Culture<\/li>\n<li>Something That Will Keep Us From Dying<\/li>\n<li>Something That Will Get People Talking<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I appreciate those descriptions and actually agree with all of them on a certain level.\u00c2\u00a0 However, <strong>doing something innovative for innovation’s sake is a recipe for disaster.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>If you\u00c2\u00a0wish to do something innovative in your church or business<\/strong>, you\u00c2\u00a0will want to work towards having\u00c2\u00a0the following 10 Characteristics\u00c2\u00a0of Effective Innovation:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Effective Innovation Is Personal<\/strong> -\u00c2\u00a0By definition, innovation is doing something\u00c2\u00a0different but\u00c2\u00a0it should never\u00c2\u00a0violate your core values.\u00c2\u00a0 It should be customized to fit your unique environment.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Effective Innovation\u00c2\u00a0Increases\u00c2\u00a0Skill<\/strong> – Any effective innovation leverages the skills of your most talented people and allows them to perform at\u00c2\u00a0higher levels.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Effective Innovation Increases\u00c2\u00a0Passion<\/strong> – Not only should your team be performing at\u00c2\u00a0higher levels, they should\u00c2\u00a0have an increased level\u00c2\u00a0of ownership\u00c2\u00a0in the organization’s results.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Effective Innovation Helps ALL Team Members\u00c2\u00a0<\/strong>-\u00c2\u00a0Innovation should be done\u00c2\u00a0in a way that it weaves expertise throughout the entire church or organization.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Effective Innovation Increases Bottom-Up Communication<\/strong> – By weaving expertise throughout the entire organization, those closest to the action and carrying out the ground-level assignments\u00c2\u00a0can give feedback\u00c2\u00a0to their leaders about the new\u00c2\u00a0processes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Effective\u00c2\u00a0Innovation\u00c2\u00a0Is Constantly Evolving\u00c2\u00a0<\/strong>– As feedback is given to the organizational leadership,\u00c2\u00a0modifications are made to improve the recently implemented processes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Effective Innovation Must IMPROVE Communication<\/strong> – The mark of any effective innovation is\u00c2\u00a0more openness and\u00c2\u00a0less isolation.\u00c2\u00a0 Effective innovation breaks down silos and builds the team concept.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Effective Innovation Determines Assignments<\/strong> – In innovative environments, assignments are determined by assigning individual skill\u00c2\u00a0to\u00c2\u00a0a particular task.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Effective Innovation Is Collaborative<\/strong> – As mentioned, effective innovation does not take place in silos.\u00c2\u00a0 It is a coordinated effort by a passionate, skillful, and hardworking team of individuals.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Effective Innovation\u00c2\u00a0Creates A Leadership Culture\u00c2\u00a0<\/strong>– Effective innovation builds leadership and allows your team to approach each day with a\u00c2\u00a0leadership bias and strategy.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>So to all of my\u00c2\u00a0friends who\u00c2\u00a0consider themselves to be\u00c2\u00a0creatives<\/strong>, I love the smoke coming from the dry ice as much as the next guy.\u00c2\u00a0 I love the black-and-white videos.\u00c2\u00a0 I love your scarf.\u00c2\u00a0 I love the shaky camera shots.\u00c2\u00a0 I love the rimmed glasses.\u00c2\u00a0 I love the multiple hairstyles.\u00c2\u00a0 I don’t even like skinny jeans on guys but\u00c2\u00a0I guess you must have some give-and-take!<\/p>\n<p>However, if you what you are doing is not accomplishing the 10 items listed above, it is not effective innovation.\u00c2\u00a0 It can be simply insulting.<\/p>\n<p>So leaders, let me ask you the question.\u00c2\u00a0 As you do
