This is the toughest blog I have ever written.  It is tough because of the consequences of something that affects most, if not all, leaders including me.

Leaders get tired.  Because of the pace and rhythm at which leaders operate, fatigue is a constant companion.  In worst case scenarios, burnout and depression set in.  These are just some of the costs of leadership.

Because of a variety of issues, some very good and some very bad, this has been an unusually draining season of life for me.  I am not depressed or burned out.  I am also not complaining but I do feel tired.  Can you relate?

Leaders must guard against fatigue because of its consequences.  It probably affects leaders in a variety of ways but here is what is does to me:

  1. I cannot sleep.  That is counter-intuitive but that is what is one of its affects on me.
  2. I lose patience more quickly with people.
  3. My “love tank” and compassion meter is not at a sufficient level.
  4. I do not have the energy to effectively engage my family.
  5. I do not have the energy to effectively serve my family.
  6. I do not have the mental energy to prepare as well as I need to.
  7. I am not as quick on my feet or mentally as sharp as I need to be.
  8. I am prone to make more mistakes.

And worst of all, I just asked asked my wife what fatigue does to me.  Her answer cut me to the core.  She matter of factly said, “You become mean, hateful, and unbearable.”  That was tough to hear.

Does my daughter feel the same way?  How about my extended family?  What would my team at work say?

I have come to believe that other than character issues, nothing can erode leadership influence more than fatigue.

Vince Lombardi once said, “Fatigue makes cowards of us all.”  Fatigue also makes us completely ineffective as leaders.

It is time for me to make some changes.  Pastor and leaders, how about you?
