Today I am being dispatched by Injoy Stewardship Solutions (ISS) to attend Day 2 of the Purpose Driven Leadership Conference.  In an effort to grow in my skills to better add value to pastors and church leaders, I will be live blogging throughout.

Today’s first session speakers were David Chrzan, Saddleback Church’s Chief of Staff along with Jim and Jennifer Cowart, Founding Pastors of Harvest Church.  The following were their thoughts on Purpose Driven Leadership:

  1. Unhealthy small groups kill themselves eventually. – Jennifer
  2. It’s easier to make babies than raise the dead. – David
  3. Don’t be afraid of not moving forward because bad things might happen.  If bad things happen, just handle it. – Jim
  4. If you want to be relevant, you have to be eternal.  Eternal is always relevant…The things that never change in people. – David
  5. What is scary is when you’re the pastor and afraid to be the first mover because they are looking for you to lead. – Jennifer
  6. There is an army ready to go and no one is telling them what hill to take. – Jennifer
  7. We don’t get to determine when God’s house is full.  The building is full but it is not the house of God.  We have to make room for people. – Jennifer
  8. Leaders see stuff before other people see it. – Jim
  9. Sow a thought and you reap an action.  Sow an action and you reap a habit.  Sow a habit and you reap a character quality.  Sow a character quality and you reap a destiny. – David quoting Rick Warren
  10. You can’t be a leader if you can’t cast a vision with what you’re trying to pay for. – Jennifer
  11. When you write, take out the word “I” and reconstruct it to say “You”.  Always be personal over professional. – David
  12. I got a lot of vision by seeing another way to do ministry…Sometimes it’s just learning from others and seeing what could be. – Jim
  13. The most leverage I have with people is from the stage and pulpit. – Jim
  14. Share a clear vision and make a clear ask.  If either of those are fuzzy, people don’t respond. – Jim
  15. Sometimes as leaders we get too far ahead of our people and you have to come back and get them. – Jim
  16. Vision casting is answering the Why question.  Why are we going to do this? – David
  17. People don’t want to waste their life. – Jennifer
  18. It’s a difficult life being a bridge builder.  – David
  19. When there are enemies, the only way to make progress is to build bridges.  Building bridges is the only way to win people to Christ.  You will never win your enemies to Christ.  You will only win your friends. – David
  20. If you’re a fighter, then about every conversation you have is picking a fight. That is your mindset. – David
  21. Not only should we be good leaders but leaders worth following. – Jim
  22. Love everybody but move with the movers. – Jim
