Are your leadership responsibilities currently more than you can bear? Leaders can have a sense of being overwhelmed on a regular basis if they are not careful. Leadership should be fun and enjoyable but here are just some of the reasons leaders may not enjoy their responsibilities.
- Hard Decisions and Tough Conversations. Don’t be foolish. They are called “hard decisions” and “tough conversations” because they are HARD and TOUGH.
- Carrying the Weight of Others and Often the Entire Organization. A leader once told me when he looked at his team he saw 50 mortgages over their heads.
- Trying “To Stay Ahead Of The Curve“. We live in a competitive marketplace and no matter how successful you are, others are constantly nipping at your heels.
- What Have You Done For Me Lately. If you have taken your organization to a new level, you will discover it has become your new baseline which you now have to exceed. There is never time to stop and smell the roses.
- Accomplishment. No matter how much we talk about the importance of the journey and the process, we all know what matters to many people is winning now.
- Next. Leadership is an oval track. There is always a “next”. The next payroll period, the next month-end, the next Sunday, the next season, etc… Life just keeps coming like waves at a beach. Time often does not afford us the privilege of enjoying success.
- Economy. Our joy often rises and falls with the current economic reality.
Many leaders enjoy their financial rewards, expense accounts, and memorable vacations. These are just some of the perks of leadership. However, there is also a leadership price which must be paid.
Leaders, you are far too important so do not burn out or lose your joy. Do not ever lose the sense of wonder and awe that comes from your creative energy, skills, and giftedness. We desperately need you. And just in case you are thinking about it – DON’T QUIT!!!
