There has been a lot written and discussed about the qualities and habits of highly successful leaders.  However, there has been little written about the individuals who develop these highly successful leaders.

After reading Daniel Coyle’s incredible book The Culture Code, I purchased another of in his series The Talent Code: Greatness Isn’t Born. It’s Grown. Here’s How.  One section I found highly interesting was the chapter entitled The Talent Whisperers.

After tremendous amounts of research, Coyle states the individuals who are the most skilled at developing highly successful leaders have the following habits:

  1. People Who Develop Highly Successful Leaders Are Experts At Their Craft – They have a long list of professional qualifications.  They possess a vast framework of knowledge.
  2. People Who Develop Highly Successful Leaders Are Quiet, Even Reserved – It may sound counter-intuitive but they are not bombastic personalities like Lombardi, Patton, pulpit-pounding pastors or other strong personalities.
  3. People Who Develop Highly Successful Leaders Are Mostly Older – They have 30-to-40 years leadership experience.  Sorry millennials!
  4. People Who Develop Highly Successful Leaders Possess A Unique Gaze – They are steady, deep and unblinking when investing in others.
  5. People Who Develop Highly Successful Leaders Listen Far More Than They Talk – They are experts at the most under-appreciated leadership skill – listening skills.
  6. People Who Develop Highly Successful Leaders Are Allergic To Pep Talks Or Inspiring Speeches – There is a better option which is the next point.
  7. People Who Develop Highly Successful Leaders Are Brief And Specific In Their Communication – They spend most of their time giving individual small, targeted, highly-specific feedback.
  8. People Who Develop Highly Successful Leaders Are Sensitive – They have a unique ability to understand how leaders are feeling.  This enables them to do the following:
  9. People Who Develop Highly Successful Leaders Customize Every Message To Their Student’s Personality – One size does not fit all when developing leaders.
  10. People Who Develop Highly Successful Leaders Are Disarming – They put people at ease with their calm and soothing approach.
  11. People Who Develop Highly Successful Leaders Hold Nothing Back – They tell students everything they know.  They give everyone everything.
  12. People Who Develop Highly Successful Leaders Are Realistic – While they can teach people everything they know, they have no control over whether people will use it or how they will turn out.
  13. People Who Develop Highly Successful Leaders Are The Example – They do not tell potential leaders what to do.  They are what they should do.
  14. People Who Develop Highly Successful Leaders Are Patient – It takes a long time to develop a highly-successful leader.

What is one thing from the list above you learned about developing highly-successful leaders?
