Everybody falls down.  All leaders fail at some point in their life.  The ability to respond to failure forms the foundation for your leadership success.  So when a lack of success comes, the question becomes how do you have a comeback in your life?

In the August 22nd edition of USA Today, Houston Texans superstar defensive end J.J. Watt was profiled.  Watt was the 2015 Defensive Player of the Year but has played in only eight games since due to a rash of injuries.

How Watt is responding to adversity in his life was the subject of the article.  As I read the story, I gleaned 11 Things It Takes To Have A Comeback In Your Life.  These lessons are going to encourage and inspire someone today.

  1. Actions Speak Louder Than Words When Having A Comeback In Your Life – Watt said, “I could say whatever I want.  I could say I’m going to have an incredible season.  I could say I’m going to have a terrible season.  It doesn’t matter what I say.  It matters what I do.”
  2. Comebacks Don’t Just Happen.  You Must Show Up Every Single Day.  Passivity Will Not Equal Comebacks.  – “So for me it’s going to practice every day”
  3. To Have A Comeback In Your Life You Must Focus On Getting Better Every Single Day – “focusing on what I have to do to get better.”
  4. Effort Is Required To Have A Comeback In Your Life – Teammate Tyrann Mathieu said, “His effort is unmatched.  I realize why he’s so special… Just seeing him show up and put in all the work, it’s special to see.”
  5. You Must Overcome Mental Hurdles To Have A Comeback In Your Life – “There’s a lot of mental hurdles that you have to climb.”
  6. There Are Dark Days When Attempting A Comeback – “You go through some very dark days”
  7. You Question Everything During Comebacks – “where you question everything.”
  8. There Is Beauty In The Comeback.  There Is Beauty In The Redemption Story.  – “When you look back at it you realize there’s definitely beauty in the struggle.”
  9. It Is Hard To See The Beauty While You Are In The Process Of Coming Back – “It’s hard to see when you’re in it.”
  10. You Will Appreciate The Journey When You Experienced A Comeback – “But when you look back at it, you appreciate what you went through”
  11. You Will Appreciate The People In Your Life When You Experienced A Comeback – “and the people that helped you to get on the other side.”

What is one thing you learned from J.J. Watt’s experience which will make you a better leader?
