Leaders are brokers of language. Many are expert communicators. Leaders know words matter. Words inspire people. A single phrase can rally a group of people and make them a team which can accomplish much.
Words can also tear people down. Demotivate them.
Leaders are smart about the words they use.
This week I have been doing a lot of traveling. On Delta flights, I rewatched Avengers: Infinity War. When doing so, I remembered watching the following trailer:
I really appreciate the words of T’Challa / Black Panther played by Chadwick Boseman. The brevity and clarity of his words are a clinic in effective communication during times of crisis. He said, “Evacuate the city. Engage all defenses. And get this man a shield.” These 12 words give us 20 leadership lessons. Let’s take a look.

- Leaders want the best for their people.

- Leaders have trained that team.
- Leaders have multiple options.

“And Get This Man A Shield”
- Leaders equip their teammates with the tools they need to be successful.
- Leaders put their teammates in positions to succeed.
- Leaders know the strengths of their teammates.
- Leaders allow their teammates to play to their strengths.
- Leaders then get out of their way.
