Trent Dilfer is one of my favorite leaders.  Whenever he speaks on the subjects of success, professionalism, excellence, leadership and what is needed to perform at the highest level, I listen.  His ability to convey complex concepts with brevity is something all communicators can learn from.  On today’s edition of The Herd With Colin Cowherd, Dilfer provided his thoughts on Sunday’s two historic NFL conference championship games.  To watch the entire episode, watch the video above.

In particular, he broke down the performances of the four quarterbacks – Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes, Jarod Goff, and Drew Brees.  As I listened to his comments, I knew I wanted my audience to learn from the content because of its application to all leaders.

The following are 17 Leadership Lessons From Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes, and Jarod Goff we learn from Trent’s comments.  Points 1-4 refer to Brady.  Points 5-9 refer to Mahomes.  Points 10-15 refer to Goff.

  1. Excellence Becomes Average When It Happens Over And Over Again – “I don’t think people talk enough about a California kid (Brady) going to play at the University of Michigan, and now the New England Patriots, playing literally hundreds of games in brutally cold weather and the ability to pierce the ball in those conditions through the wind.”
  2. Great Leaders Are Dedicated To Their Craft – “I’ve known Tom Brady and Tom House forever and I know their dedication to the craft… Quarterbacking is a craft.”
  3. Great Leaders Are Pioneers – “Tom really was the pioneer in making quarterback training mainstream.”
  4. Great Leaders Are Always Searching For The Extra 1% – “It’s a testament to always trying to get better and that’s Tom Brady’s mantra.  He’s already the G.O.A.T. and he’s trying to find that extra 1% anytime he can.”
  5. Passivity Is The Enemy Of Leadership Momentum – “Patrick was a victim of having to watch the game in the first half.”
  6. Great Leaders Are Rare And Hard To Find – “Once in a generation-type talent.”
  7. Great leaders are “Incredibly intuitive.”
  8. Great Leaders Have No Quit – “A guy whose got no quit in him.”
  9. Great Leaders Are Resourceful – “He can make something out of nothing.”
  10. Great Leaders Are Great Competitors – “A guy whose got tremendous competitive fire.”
  11. Great Leaders Are Mentally Tough – “A guy whose got great mental toughness.”
  12. A Great Leader “Is very precise.”
  13. Great Leaders Own The Room – “Is a commanding leader.”
  14. Great Leaders Are Gritty Leaders – “But most importantly, that grit that he has.”
  15. Great Leaders Have Great Resilience – “Overcoming what they overcame early and weathering the storm takes incredible resilience.”
  16. Great Teams Put A Premium For Execution In Urgent Moments – “Overtime creates urgency and puts a premium for execution within urgent moments.”
  17. “The better team, the team that has a higher level of sophistication, a higher level of intellect, a higher level of poise win these overtime games.”
