May 1st through 3rd are three of my favorite leadership days of the year.  Each year, INJOY Stewardship Solutions allows me to live-blog the Orange and ReThink Leadership Conferences.  No event stretches my thinking more and make me a smarter and better-equipped leader than this event.

If you are unfamiliar with ReThink and Orange, let me give you an overview.  Hosted by Carey Nieuwhof, ReThink is a series of Ted Talk-stlyle lessons from some of the most innovative minds in business and leadership.  Orange is simply the nation’s preeminent organization on children’s ministry.

As part of my time here, INJOY Stewardship is offering a FREE Capital Campaign Calculator for your church.  If your church needs to raise significant capital in the next two years, this will be a wonderful source of information for you.

The event’s first speaker was its host Carey Nieuwhof. Carey is the founding pastor of Connexus Church and is author of several books, including his latest best-selling work, Didn’t See It Coming: Overcoming the Seven Greatest Challenges That No One Expects and Everyone ExperiencesCarey speaks to church leaders around the world about leadership, change and personal growth. He writes one of today’s most widely read church leadership blogs at CareyNieuwhof.comand hosts two podcasts—the top-rated Carey Nieuwhof Leadership Podcast, where he interviews some of today’s best leaders, and the Canadian Church Leader’s Podcast, where he helps Canadian church leaders reach people.

The following are 22 leadership lessons and quotes from his enlightening lesson on the changing workplace:

  1. Everywhere I go I hear more and more complaints about the younger generation.
  2. Sometime in the church we are the last people who catch on.
  3. There are four generations of people at work – Boomers 1946-1964, Gen X 1965 – 1981, Millennials 1981 – 1998, Gen Z 1998 and beyond.
  4. Many older leaders say about the younger generation, “They want everything now.” “They want today what took you 15-20 years to get… And they don’t play by the rules.”
  5. I broke all the rules but the rules were bad.
  6. We are moving into a decade when all the rules will fall apart on our watch.
  7. For us who have led for more than a decade the rules at work changed on us without us knowing it.
  8. You used to go to the office but now the office goes to you.
  9. This is why so many people feel overwhelmed is because there is no longer any closure for work.
  10. Young leaders work for themselves even if they are your full-time employees.
  11. Bu 2027, the gig economy will be over 50% of the economy.
  12. 59% of US companies are already using flexible work forces and freelancers to some degree.
  13. Remote workers aren’t lazy. Lazy workers are lazy.
  14. Freedom and autonomy are a new form of currency every high capacity leader wants.
  15. They want to work for a cause that’s bigger than you.
  16. We have the best mission in the world but sometimes our leadership doesn’t reflect it.
  17. Nobody wants to work for me. My life is not a big enough cause to give their life for.
  18. Most younger leaders really want to work. They just want meaningful work.  You as a leader must lift up the meaningful work.
  19. If the mission isn’t bigger than you, you need a better mission.
  20. The best leaders in the future will manage outcomes, not processes.
  21. In the old economy, process was a key to productivity.
  22. In the new economy, outcome is the key. In the new economy, most people would much rather be evaluated on outcomes and entrusted with the process.

The bar was raised high.  What an incredible way to start the conference!  I can’t wait for the next session.
