May 1st through 3rd are three of my favorite leadership days of the year. Each year, INJOY Stewardship Solutions allows me to live-blog the Orange and ReThink Leadership Conferences. No event stretches my thinking more and make me a smarter and better-equipped leader than this event.
If you are unfamiliar with ReThink and Orange, let me give you an overview. Hosted by Carey Nieuwhof, ReThink is a series of Ted Talk-stlyle lessons from some of the most innovative minds in business and leadership. Orange is simply the nation’s preeminent organization on children’s ministry.

The day’s final speaker was Dharius Daniels. Dharius is a cultural architect and trendsetter for his generation. He is the founder and Lead Pastor of Change Church, a vibrant ministry that impacts people of all ages, socioeconomic classes, and ethnic backgrounds.
The following are 22 leadership lessons and quotes from his incredible lesson on the Art of Communication:
- The construction (of the Tower of Babel) ceased when God confused the language. When the communication became unclear their effort became unsuccessful.
- We are building people.
- There is no construction without communication.
- We cannot be unintentional when improving in this area. Words are important.
- Leaders should be intentional about improving their CQ. We need conversational intelligence.
- Leave a legacy with words people can live by. I’m still living on Spurgeon’s words, Moody’s words, Wesley’s words, Dr. King’s words.
- The Key of Clarity…. It is almost impossible what I don’t understand.
- Communication is the transfer of thoughts, ideas, concepts, and feelings from one mind to the next.
- Communication is transportation. If there has been no transportation there can be no communication. Just because I’ve talked doesn’t mean I’ve communicated.
- I’m not a communicator. I’m a truck driver. I deliver mail and it is precious cargo. I have to ensure it gets to its intended destination.
- Speed matters. Pace is important. Too fast I leave them. Too slow I lose them.
- Space matters. There is power in the pregnant pause. Pauses are powerful.
- The Key of Conviction. It is impossible to be convincing if I’m not convinced.
- We are the ones sent on behalf of another.Preachers don’t have a message. God has a message and uses preachers.
- If a person has mastered the art of being convincing while not being convinced may not be messengers but manipulators.
- The Key Of Consideration. They need to see themselves as servants even while they’re speaking.
- When a speaker doesn’t see himself as servant they become a slave to a style. The become more concerned with their comfort and style than their message.
- Communicators must have eagle eyes. An eagle’s eyes weigh more than their brain. Their advantage is their eyes.
- The Key of Content. Content matters. All of the Bible should be preached but all the Bible won’t be preached by the same people at the same place. We all end up at Jesus but we don’t all start at the same place.
- People are already being discipled before they get to our church. The most prevelant is culture.
- Where does the Bible make people rich in the areas they are poor in…. Just because something is good doesn’t mean its relevant.
- The Key of Creativity– May we be more than communicators. May we be painters. May they do more than hear it. May they see it.
