Every church I work with wants to go to the next level.  Every business, non-profit, or athletic organization I speak with wants to go to the next level as well.  The question becomes how.  But the reality is this is the wrong question.

The better question for any church, business, non-profit, or business is who?  The answer to every problem you are facing as an organization is a person.

The video above shows Houston Astros superstar Jose Altuve’s historic game-winning and series-ending walk-off home run against the New York Yankees in this year’s American League Champion Series.  Team president Reid Ryan told the USA Today in an October 21st interview, “This was a great series, an unbelievable series, but the only difference, is that we have Jose Altuve.  The Yankees didn’t.  It’s that simple.”

After hitting his home run, Altuve took part in an on-field interview.  His comments at the 5:48 mark give us insight into the type of leader your organization should be looking for to go to the next level.

  1. The Type Of Leader Who Will Take You To The Next Level Is Humble – “First of all I want to thank God and the fans for a beautiful game.”
  2. The Type Of Leader Who Will Take You To The Next Level Works Hard, Very Hard – “We deserve to be in the World Series because my team has been working real hard to this point.”
  3. The Type Of Leader Who Will Take You To The Next Level Shows Respect For Others – “(Aroldis) Chapman is one of the best closers I’ve ever faced.”
  4. The Type Of Leader Who Will Take You To The Next Level Puts His Family First – This shows his or her priorities are in order.  “I’m too shy.  Last time I did that (tore his shirt) I got in trouble with my wife.”
  5. The Type Of Leader Who Will Take You To The Next Level Values The Contributions Of Everyone On The Team – Have you ever heard someone who hits a walk-off give credit to someone who just took a walk.  “We won the game not because I hit a homer… Springer just walked and put some pressure on them… We win as a team.”

The one thing every church, business, non-profit, and athletic organizations needs to go to the next level is a leader who is humble, works hard, shows respect for others, puts their family first, and values the contributions of everyone on the team.

To quote Reid Ryan, it’s that simple.
