Sports provides such a metaphor for life. In Buddy Martin’s book, Urban’s Way: Urban Meyer, The Florida Gators, And His Plan To Win, he tells about a lesson Coach Meyer learned from his mentor Coach Earl Bruce.
Bruce said, “The huddle is the greatest in football, because it doesn’t matter whether you are black or white or Hispanic or Polynesian or Chinese, Catholic or Jewish. On fourth down and one, everybody grabs a hand and squeezes tight and says, ‘Let’s go.’ Churches aren’t like that. Businesses are not like that. Some families are not like that. But the huddle breaks every barrier – religious, racial, rich or poor.”
Bruce comments remind us that when you are in the proverbial foxhole, when desperation arrives, when hard times hit, when you’re in over your head, and when it’s fourth and one, labels placed on others do not matter.
What is important is can the people all around you get the job done?
I often tell my daughter she will be the average of her five closest friends. These five people make up her huddle.
So the questions begs, who’s in your huddle?
- Is it diverse?
- Are they skilled?
- Do they have your best interests in mind?
- Will they sacrifice for you?
- Will they be with you during good times and bad?
- Are they smart?
- Do they have great thinking skills?
- Do they see the best in you?
- Do they see not only what you are but what you could be?
- Can they help you reach your full potential?
