Do you want to be a leader? Do you want to know what greatness looks like?
This past Sunday, a post-practice video of New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees has gone viral. Shot by former teammate Reggie Bush, is 2 minutes 30 seconds of an absolute clinic of what is necessary for greatness and to be a leader.
The following are 10 lessons I gleaned from Drew Brees about leadership and greatness. All quotes are from Bush.
- “A lot of people in this world want to be great. A lot of young guys talk about it.”
- There are no short-cuts to greatness. Many people want “the easy, short-cut route to greatness.”
- If you want to do what no one else is doing, you must have done what no else was willing to do. Drew Brees, the most famous and decorated player on the team, was the last person on the field. He was working out 40 minutes after practice.
- Your best player should also be your hardest worker. If so, you likely have a great culture and very successful team.
- Great leaders see things first. Mental reps, visualization, are just as important as physical reps.
- Leadership is a team sport. To be great you must be willing to go the extra mile for the teammate right beside you.
- Great leaders have learned to leverage solitude. They understand the value of quietness, no distractions, and thinking time.
- You cannot be a great leader or great performer without great preparation. Great preparation makes you an expert at your craft.
- You cannot be a great leader or great performer without great consistency. Brees has done the work shown above every day, every week for years.
- Return On Investment. You get out what you put in. You reap what you sow. This is why Brees is the greatest statistical quarterback in NFL history.
