On Sunday January 12th, the Kansas City Chiefs fell behind the Houston Texans 24-0 in the second quarter of the divisional round of the AFC play-offs..  It appeared to everyone watching it would take a miracle for the Chiefs to come back.  Everyone that is, except Chiefs head coach Andy Reid.

At the 3:25 mark in the video above, the Chiefs scored their first touchdown.  The commentators said the Chiefs should go for the 2-point conversion rather than the 1-point extra point kick.  The reason makes sense.  It would only take three 8-point possessions to catch the Texans rather than 4 7-point possessions.

But then Coach Reid did something counter-intuitive.  Coach Reid raised one finger in the air indicating he wanted to go for the extra point kick and thus, a minimum of four possessions to overtake Houston.  But why?

Here is what Coach Reid knew.

  1. He knew not to panic.  Why…
  2. He knew his team could easily score 25 or more points.
  3. He knew the talent that was on his team.
  4. He knew his players were well-prepared.
  5. He knew he had a great gameplan.
  6. He knew his team was doing all the right things.  Therefore….
  7. He knew it was only a matter of time before success would come
  8. Most importantly, he had quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

That is why head coach Andy Reid raised only one finger and kicked an extra point.

Why is this important?

Many leaders reading this post entered 2020 with a great plan and for whatever reason, your first month did not get off to a great start.  There is a tendency to panic.  But if you have a great plan, great team, great systems, and great leadership, RELAX.  When everyone else is panicking, hold one finger into the air just like Coach Reid.  Seriously, do that.  Remind everyone not to panic.  Things are under control.

Oh, and if you did not already know, the Chiefs won the game 51-31.
