Genius is making the complicated simple, not the simple complicated.  Today, I had the privilege of speaking with a pastor who was telling me about how healthy his leadership culture was.  I then said, “Well, I have to ask the obvious follow-up question.  How did you develop such a healthy culture?”

He went on to explain the importance of the book Culture Of Honor: Sustaining A Supernatural Environment and the pivotal role it played in the formation of their church and staff.  In all their dealings, they want to follow the book’s teachings and deepen their culture of honor.

For instance, every staff meeting begins with a member of their team telling a story of how they saw one of the church’s core values displayed.  This does several things:

  1. Culture is what you do, not what you say.  Starting meetings this way places living out the church’s core values a top priority.
  2. It then honors those who live out the core values.
  3. It provides the framework necessary to coach those who do not show honor to others or live out the core values.

This is a simple practice any leader can do.  Start every meeting with a success story of how your core values have been lived out.  By doing so, you show honor to people.  This also makes meetings something not to be dreaded but times of celebration.

Those reading this post will likely have staff meetings either Monday or Tuesday.  Start those times together not with reports or “areas of opportunity and growth”, but rather by showing honor to those living out your core values and see the difference it makes over time.
