One of the things leaders must do during COVID-19 and all the other issues we currently face is point their teams to a brighter tomorrow.  So how do you do that when you have serious doubts yourself?

First, you have to believe in every fiber of your being all the things you have been preaching over the years.

One such thing is what I just mentioned.  Leaders always point to a brighter tomorrow.  You have no other choice.  Think about it, if you don’t point to a brighter tomorrow, what should anyone follow you in the first place?  No one wants to follow someone to a bleaker future.

This past week I had the privilege of speaking to a group of leaders in hopes of inspiring them to persevere during these challenging times.  After spending time together, I came away convinced not only was a breakthrough imminent, but they were going to thrive in a post-COVID environment.

The basis for my thoughts were Pat Riley’s Leading Indicators of a Breakthrough About To Happen from his book The Winner Within: A Life Plan For Team Players.  Slightly modifying Riley’s thoughts to fit their culture, the following are the 5 Things You Need For Your Church, Business, Non-Profit or Athletic Organization To Have A Breakthrough:

  1. The frustration of knowing great sacrifice and hard work , but not seeing the results.
  2. Deep frustration, but still a compelling need and desire to act on the behalf of each other and their customers.
  3. A hunger to reclaim dignity, pride, and honor in their selves and teammates after continual rejection and failure.
  4. An unflinching recognition that better days are ahead.
  5. Team ownership and leaders who have made significant sacrifices to their teams can withstand challenges more easily.

The following are the 5 reasons why I felt a breakthrough was imminent for this team based on the list above:

  1. This team has worked very hard, pivoted and shown significant innovation since March.
  2. This team deeply cares for each other and its customers.
  3. This team is hungry and desperately looking for breakthroughs.
  4. This team was one of the most optimistic I have ever encountered.
  5. The organization’s leaders were some of the most generous people I have ever met.

When you look at the list above, is your organization ready for a breakthrough?  If not, this list gives you a good template for what you need to work on to see a brighter tomorrow.
