For the next two days I will be live blogging the Global Leadership Summit. This is a special moment as the Summit will be celebrating its 25th year of investing in leaders. As we prepare to learn from this year’s speaker lineup, I want to take a look back at last year’s best leadership quotes.
I also would like to invite you to join myself, Rick Warren, Nona Jones, Bob Goff, Carey Nieuwhof, Mark Patterson and over 100 of today’s top Christian thinkers for the upcoming Navigating A New Season First Impressions Conference. This digital event will take place from November 4th through 6th. Nothing will prepare your church or organization to be effective in 2021 more than this event. The afternoon’s first speaker was Vanessa Van Edwards. Vanessa is lead investigator at the Science of People— a human behavior research lab, whose goal is to use the latest scientific research and trends to help leaders master their people skills. Her innovative work has been featured on CNN, NPR, Fast Company and Entrepreneur Magazine and she regularly speaks to innovative companies including Google, Facebook, Comcast, Microsoft and Penguin Random-House.
The following are 15 Leadership Quotes From Vanessa Van Edwards’s Session:
- There are naturally-born leaders and naturally-made leaders.
- When you first see someone, you are judging them on warmth and confidence.
- Most people who are off-the-charts on warmth are seen as sweet and smart, but not competent and relatable.
- Off-the-charts on competence are seen as smart but not collaborative or a great team player.
- What makes a leader a leader is they are off-the-charts in both of these areas.
- Leaders are purposeful with their cues.
- Think about how you want someone to feel before, during and after interacting with you.
- Avoid negative introductions and interactions. Your terrible the other person’s brain to think bad. Prime for positive.
- Communication has gotten less and less emotional and more sterile. We are not setting people up for success.
- Hands are our trust indicators. We use hands to show intention and trust.
- The least popular TED Talkers use an average of 272 hand gestures in 18 minutes. The most popular TED Talkers use 465 hand gestures in 18 minutes.
- Our brain gives 12.5 times more weight to our gestures than our words. You must be able to talk on two tracks.
- Always show your hands on video calls and when you talk.
- When you assume the best in others, they more likely rise to the occasion.
- Tone of voice signals confidence and competence.
What a great talk! The morning’s final speaker is Nona Jones. Make sure you check back regularly for live blog updates.
