Have you ever hit an air bag in a car?  You are going at a certain rate of speed and suddenly come to a crashing halt.  That is what tonight’s experience of FINALLY returning to a movie theater was like.  It had been over six months since I watched the wonderful I Still Believe.  I was so excited.  It was exciting being back in my favorite AMC location.  The excitement level was high…. and then I hit the air bag entitled The New Mutants.

There is a reason a movie which finished production in 2017 was released or made available to critics for review until 2020.  This movie is clearly a holdover prior to Disney’s purchase of the Marvel properties from Fox.  I can’t recommend it to anyone for a variety of reasons.  I hate being so negative but I would not even watch it for free on Disney+ when it eventually arrives there.  Too many other better options.  In fact, it is a godless movie.

Short version of story – five teenagers with undiscovered mutant abilities (teleportation, fire, quicksilver speed) are trapped in an asylum where they are having tests run on them by Dr. Reyes, played by Alice Braga.  Think off it as evil Charles Xavier Academy.

But trust me, save your money and time and just wait for Tenet next week.

The following are 4 Leadership Quotes And Lessons From The New Mutants:

  1. COVID has reset our expectations. – The theater I went to had trouble with their cash registers.  The screen had a green line through the movie.  Then with about 15 minutes left in the film, the movie stopped.  I give the 20+ people in the theater I was with credit.  The movie theater’s management profusely apologized and gave us a free pass to another movie of our choice (see picture).  Many of us said, “Hey, with what we’ve been through the last six months, I think we can handle this.  Thank you for the free pass and we’ll be back.”  The manager was very appreciative of our attitude and said they’re trying to get ramped back up as well.  Aren’t we all.
  2. This Movie Is Partially Correct.  There Are Two People Warring For Your Soul – The Holy Spirit and Satan.  Which One Will You Choose? – Dani said, “There’s a Native American proverb that says: Inside every person there are two bears, forever locked in combat for your soul. One bear is all things good: compassion, love, trust. The other is all things evil: fear, shame and self-destruction.”
  3. Successful Leaders Are Not Limited By Their Circumstances – Illyana said, “This isn’t a hospital. It’s a cage.”
  4. Too Many Leaders Put Lids On The Potential Of Young Leaders – Dr.Reyes told the mutants, “Did you know baby rattlesnakes are more dangerous than adult ones? They haven’t learned how to control how much venom they secrete. All of you are dangerous. That’s why you’re here.”

I wish I could be more positive but my recommendation is to save what could be your dwindling money in a post-PPP world and go to Tenet next week.  I’ll be there.  So check back next week for my leadership lessons and quotes from Chris Nolan’s latest masterpiece.
