The difference between successful organizations (churches, businesses, families, non-profits, athletic organizations, etc…) and unsuccessful ones can often be summed up in one word – CULTURE.  I define culture as the collective character, competence, and creativity within your organization that drives day-to-day behavior and results.

Michael Lombardi often writes about the subject of culture.  He recently tweeted the video shown above and also wrote a compelling article for The Daily Coach about the culture of the Miami Heat which you can read HERE.  As I watched the video, I felt the analysis of ESPN commentator Jeff Van Gundy was so insightful, I wanted to share it with you.

The following are 7 Signs Of A Winning Culture I gleaned from Van Gundy’s comments.  Contained within is the most important sign of a great culture.  All comments are from Van Gundy:

  1. Winning Cultures Are Led By Respected Leaders. – When you watch the video you notice every player surrounding and listening to the coaching of Miami Heat head coach Eric Spoelstra.  Coach Spoelstra is engaged, working hard, connecting with his players, and creating a sustainable culture which will bleed over into 2021.
  2. Winning Cultures Have Consistent, Positive Behaviors. – “This is every huddle with Miami.”
  3. Winning Cultures Have Total Buy-In And The Complete Attention Of Its Team Members. – “There’s no one straggling away.”
  4. Winning Cultures Are Not Made During Chaos And Adversity.  They Are Revealed. – “This is when they’re down and getting blown out in a Finals game to end their season.”  This is the top sign of a great culture.
  5. Winning Cultures Have Great Unity. – “They are together.”
  6. Winning Cultures Are The Breeding Ground For The Players And Teams Who Win Championships – “Eric Spoelstra talked about Jimmy Butler being a champion before he was a champion.  To me, that’s a championship team before they’re a championship team.”
  7. Winning Cultures Are Not Like Everyone Else.  They Conduct Their Business In An Uncommon Way. – “I just love the way they conduct their business.”

A friend of mine who is a professional baseball scout sent me the following text after reading this posts – “Culture isn’t lead and driven by one with a hatchet or whip—but the heart and serving.  One of the worse things I see leaders of orgs or departments do is only communicate to their people when they want something out of them, from them, or pointing out negative things. The leader should connect with his/her people simply just to say hello, see how they are doing, family is doing, and thank them for being a part of the team.  Or it will become the employee looking at his phone or email and seeing who it’s from, cringes because they know it will only be something negative. That’s poor leadership.”

What is one thing you learned from the video above which will help you take your culture to the next level.
