Recently I started regularly posting Interesting Stats For The Day on my Twitter and Facebook accounts.  The response has been quite positive.

It is a HOT summer

  • The low in Phoeniz, AZ on Tuesday June 15th at 91 degrees.  Read that again – the LOW was 91 degrees.
  • Only 44% of homes in metro Seattle had air conditioning in 2019, the lowest rate of air-conditioned homes of any major American city, according to the US Census Bureau. We bring this up because the Pacific Northwest has been melting under an unheard-of heat wave. Temps in Seattle broke their record by about 7°F yesterday, and Portland was 4° hotter than Atlanta’s all-time high.
  • Here’s a 2020 stat – 5 of the 6 largest wildfires in modern California history happened during the 2020, killing 30+ people. Experts say the current conditions are much worse.

Impact of COVID

  • Vermont is the first state to hit 80% and is considerably ahead of the national vaccination rate (61%).
  • A Harris Poll survey found that 61% of US adults’ weight fluctuated in the past year, with an average weight gain of 29 pounds among those that put on weight.

Cyber Security

  • JBS is the world’s largest meat processor. The US accounts for half its revenue. Over the Memorial Day weekend, hackers shut it down impacting nearly 20% of its production.  JBS ultimately paid an $11 million ransom to the hackers.

Business

  • A record 41 women are now running Fortune 500 companies.
  • Washington Prime Group, an owner of more than 100 malls across the US, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Missed Opportunities

  • The U.S. Travel Association found that American workers had 768 million unused vacation days in 2019.
  • 26% of podcasts in the Apple Podcasts app have produced just one episode.

The World Of Jeff Bezos

  • Bidding is ongoing to sit between Jeff Bezos & his brother for the inaugural July 20 Blue Origin passenger space flight. Current price on June 7 was $2.8M for 11 minutes together. I recommend the new book Amazon Unbound releasing June 9 for $18.90 instead.
  • In her 2019 divorce settlement with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, MacKenzie Scott received a 4% slice of Amazon, which was worth $36 billion at the time. Thanks to the company’s rising valuation, today she’s the world’s 20th wealthiest person.

  • Per a 2015 Harvard Business Review article, people with specific goals are generally ten times more likely to achieve success.

Where Americans Are Putting Their Money

  • The number of Costco memberships is now higher than the number of US households that pay for cable TV, according to Bloomberg. The renewal rate was 91% last year.
  • “There’s millions of pets that are basically a furry annuity for the next decade. And that’s unique to our industry. And they’re going to give us a tailwind for years to come.” – Petco CEO Ron Coughlin after Americans spent a record $103.6 billion on their pets in 2020.

  • The average car in the US is now 12.1 years old, according to new IHS Markit data.

Entertainment // Fast And Furious Destruction

  • About 1,800 cars have been destroyed in the films of the Fast & Furious franchise, not including the ninth installment, F9, which hits theaters today. Fun fact: Insurance companies use movies like the F&F series to train actuaries on how to calculate loss, per Screen Rant.

Interesting Sports Facts

  • Since the inception of the College Football Playoff in 2015, Alabama has won eight playoff games.  During the same period, the Kansas Jayhawks have won nine games total.
  • College coaches were the highest-paid public employee in 40 states in 2019.
  • 39% of all sports viewership is football per @ColinCowherd Think about that, 2 out of every 5 times a person watches sports, it’s football.
