A Savage Nickname

On June 2, 2021, TNT analyst Charles Barkley coined a nickname for Los Angeles Lakers forward Anthony Davis which the young people would refer to as “savage.”  He began calling Davis “Street Clothes.”  Watch the video below for the reason why:

Barkley called Davis “Street Clothes” because he is often-injured and unable to play for the team.

A Lost Opportunity

Recently, Dr. Jurdan Mendiguchia made an interesting observation in this article saying, “There’s this premise that the success of player depends on ability, which is made up of technical, physical, tactical and psychological aspects, and that this is then multiplied by their availability.”

The world-renowned physiotherapist adds, “Many players have told me that Arjen Robben could have been close to Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi in ability, but he didn’t make it because he didn’t have much availability.”

What we learn from Anthony Davis, Dr. Mendiguchia, and Arjen Robben is what experienced leaders already know.  The three greatest abilities a leader has are the following:

  1. Availability
  2. Dependability
  3. Reliability

A Sobering Reality

A person may have elite talent like Davis and Robben.  They may have all the potential in the world.  We may be seduced by their skills and dream of what our organization could become with them at full-strength.

But we just can’t depend on them to be there when we need them.  Their availability is suspect and as a result, they are unreliable.

Every leadership ability – people skills, strategic thinking, communication skills, team building, vision, etc…. – is built upon the foundation of availability, dependability, and reliability.  Everything flows from those.

And if you are not these three things, you can’t be on the team.  I’m sorry but trust is lost.  I can’t count on you and am now forced to pick someone I can.

The Top 75 Leadership Quotes From 2021 Part 2 is my latest ebook.  For many entering a post-pandemic environment, leadership looks completely different than the pre-pandemic world.  People are more broken now. They are more uncertain. Fear and anxiousness are unwelcome constant companions. Cultures are more unhealthy. Relationships are more dysfunctional.  Hope seems to be in short supply.  Every day seems to bring a new hacking, natural disaster, or unexpected calamity.

Therefore, the fundamentals of leadership are more important than ever. The quotes in this book deal with the basics of leadership.  If you want to be the best leader you can possibly be, click HERE or on the image provided to download this FREE resource.  The lessons learned from last year, if applied, will sustain you for years to come.
