A Leading Pastor And Coach
Tom Mullins is the founding pastor of Christ Fellowship Church in Palm Beach Gardens, FL. Prior to leading one of America’s greatest churches, Coach Mullins was a very successful high school and college football coach. Today, I was in attendance as he spoke to the team of INJOY Stewardship Solutions. Coach Mullins concluded his time by sharing what allows leaders to truly make a difference and stand out from all others.
To illustrate his point, he told the following story:
A Summer Of Learning
While coaching Georgetown College (KY) in 1977, Coach Mullins arranged for he and his coaching staff to spend several days at the training camps of the Ohio State Buckeyes and Cincinnati Bengals. They witnessed everything these elite level teams did from training to nutrition to practice schedules. Afterwards, Coach Mullins and his staff began to download what they learned and how they could best apply those lessons to their team.
Coaches Mullins said, “They’re (Ohio State and Cincinnati) teaching the same fundamentals we’re teaching. The difference is they execute them more consistently and they had a training program which made them physically stronger than we were.”
He then concluded with the primary lesson for all leaders to apply today, “It’s all about the consistency of the execution of the fundamentals which make us stand out.”
Leadership Lessons
The following are three leadership lessons we learn from Coach Mullins’s experience:
- For the most part, all leaders have access to the same information.
- The best leaders have a defined personal development (training) plan to get better.
- The difference between professionals and amateurs is the consistent execution of the fundamentals of their craft.
