The three best business leadership books I have read in the last five years are Steve Robinson’s Covert Cows and Chick-fil-A: How Faith, Cows, and Chicken Built an Iconic Brand and Jim Collins’s BE 2.0: Turning Your Business into an Enduring Company.  The third book is Patrick Lencioni’s new classic The 6 Types Of Working Genius: A Better Way To Understand Your Gifts, Your Frustrations, And Your Team releasing on Tuesday, September 27th.

I think so highly of this book I recommended it to the executive leadership of my company.  I feel this resource is what is needed to take us to the next level.  Furthermore, I feel the principles in this book will also take your organization to the next level.  You should purchase several copies of this book today by clicking HERE or on the image provided.

Here is the principle Patrick is teaching: There are 6 working geniuses.  Everyone is very strong (a genius) in two, competent in two, and weak in two.  The key is to know your geniuses and avoid, delegate, or staff out your weaknesses while playing to your geniuses.

Lencioni wrote, “It wasn’t until I started working myself that I learned that jobs were often a source of frustration for people, and that the causes of this included bad managers, poor company leadership, broken relationships with colleagues, and people having to do jobs that didn’t match their natural talents and gifts.”  It is the talents and gifts this book addresses.

The following are the The 6 Types Of Working Genius with supporting comments for each:

Wonder

  • “The ability to ponder and speculate and question the state of things, asking questions that provoke answers and action.”
  • “They find it easy to lose themselves in observing the world around them and wondering whether things shouldn’t be different or whether there is untapped potential that should be tapped.”

Invention

  • “Is all about coming up with new ideas and solutions.”
  • “People with this genius are drawn toward origination, creativity, and ingenuity in the truest sense of those words, even with little direction or context.”

Discernment

  • “Is related to instinct, intuition, and uncanny judgment.”
  • “People with this genius have a natural ability to assess an idea or situation, even without a lot of data or expertise.”
  • “Using pattern recognition and gut feel, they are able to provide valuable advice and around those subjects.”

Galvanizing

  • “Is about rallying, motivating, and provoking people to take action around an idea or an initiative.”
  • “People with this genius are naturally inclined to inspire and enlist others to get involved with an endeavor.”

Enablement

  • “Involves providing people with support and assistance in the way that it is needed.”
  • “People with this genius are adept at responding to the needs of others without conditions or restrictions.”
  • “Individuals with the Genius of Enablement are frequently unaware that this is a genius at all.”

Tenacity

  • “Is about the satisfaction of pushing things across the finish line to completion.”
  • “They get energy pushing through obstacles and seeing the impact of their work, and they find joy in crossing tasks off their list and getting closure.”

You need to purchase the book to get all the applications but I will provide additional quotes to address an obvious item.  What about Genius vs. Competency vs. Frustration.

Working Genius

  • “Each of us has two areas that are considered our true geniuses.  These are activities that give us joy, energy, and passion.  As a result, we are usually quite good in these areas.”

Working Competency

  • “These are activities that we find neither completely miserable nor completely joyful, and which we can do fairly well, perhaps even very well… but we will eventually grow weary if we are not allowed to exercise our true geniuses.”

Working Frustration

  • “Each of us has two types of work that drain us of our joy and energy, and we call these our working frustrations.  We usually struggle in these activities… in these activities, we are bound to experience misery at work, and ultimately, struggle or even fail.”
