Leadership does not have to be that hard.  There will undoubtably be significant challenges but you don’t have to unnecessarily sabotage your success.

A Newscast Suddenly Goes Off The Rails

Sometimes leaders can learn important lessons from the most humorous circumstances and unusual places.  Such an event took place on December 22, 2022 when KWWL-TV in Iowa dispatched their award-winning sports reporter Mark Woodley to cover the blizzard impacting their region.  Evidently the normal weather reporter was unavailable.  To say things went off the rails would be an understatement.  A compilation of Woodley’s “best” moments are shown below.

8 Funny Quotes

Notice some of his comments:

  • “The same way I felt eight minutes ago when you asked me that same question.”
  • “What better time to ask the sports guy to come in about five hours earlier than when he would normally wake up, go stand out in the wind and the cold and the snow and tell other people not to do the same?”
  • “I did not realize there was a 3:30 also in the morning until today.”
  • “This is a really long show.  Tune in for the next couple of hours to watch me progressively get crankier and crankier.”
  • “The outdoors is currently not heated.”
  • “I’ve got good news and bad news.  The good news is I can still feel my face right now.  The bad news is I kind of wish I couldn’t.”
  • “I’m sure you added an extra hour to this show because somebody likes torturing me.”
  • “Live in Waterloo for the last time this morning, thankfully, I’m Mark Woodley News 7 KWWL.”

The Leadership Lesson

I mentioned earlier that sometimes leadership does not need to be that hard.  Here is one simple leadership lesson we learn from Mark Woodly, News 7 KWWL, and the video above:

Place people in positions where they can play to their strengths.

While humorous and quite memorable, asking the sports guy to do hours of live, onsite weather reporting was probably not the most prudent idea.  Allowing people to play to their strengths increases morale, productivity, and profits.  It also reduces employee turnover.

The question all leaders reading this post should ask is are you having the proverbial sports guys in your organization reporting the weather?  If so, it may not turn out so humorous for you.
