A Spinning Huddle

In the second quarter of today’s Kansas City Chiefs’s victory over the Las Vegas Raiders, the team’s offense did not something in their pre-snap huddle no one had ever seen before.  The team began spinning in a collective circle which then flowed into a unique formation.  Watch the entertaining video below:

To get some insight into the creative genius of Kansas City’s head coach Andy Reid who approved the team’s actions, watch the video below.  Afterwards, I will provide some insights into how Coach Reid thinks and approaches life and the game of football.

5 Lessons On Being A Creative Genius From Kansas City Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid

The following are five lessons we learn about Coach Reid and his creative process from the video above.  First is the lesson followed by Reid’s quote.

Creative Geniuses Make Big Deals Of Small Details

Coach Reid said,  “Are you going to let the little things slide or are you going to step on them”.  Many people mistakingly think creatives are flighty and easily distracted.  Creating at an elite level, however, requires intentionality and focusing on the minutest of details.  Reid knows the little things compound into items of major importance.

Creative Geniuses Are Always Doing A Little Extra

Coach Reid would agree the difference between ordinary and extraordinary really is just a little extra.  You must do more than what is expected.  He said, “go do that extra little bit of work”.  If you want to be set apart in a creative environment (or any other endeavor for that matter), you must do things which are uncommon and no one else is doing.  Put in the extra hours and think at a different level.

Creative Geniuses Ask Great Questions

Intelligence can be measured by the quality of questions being asked.  Coach Reid asked the perfect question, “Do you want to be great?”  Great questions bring clarity and cut away clutter.  Asking the right question will direct all your thinking and resources towards solutions.

Creative Geniuses Create Every Day

Creativity and success are daily things.  It is about discipline, a process, marginal gains, and creating a performance identity.  Coach Reid said, “My thing is, every day – be great.”  You need to expect to be great and practice on a daily basis the habits which lead to greatness.

Creative Geniuses Are Not In The Comparison Business

There is a reason we have never seen a spinning huddle before, because few if any coaches would ever have the courage to do it and even fewer would think of such a thing.  This is the essence of creative genius.  It is a process of self-discovery and individual self-expression.  Coach Reid said, “It’s not comparing yourself to anybody else, but maximizing what you are.”

Conclusion

Do you want to be the type of creative genius who invents the spinning huddle?  Then every day make a big deal of small details, do extra work, ask great questions, and do not compare yourself to others but maximize your individual skills and thinking.  If you do these things, just might become a creative genius yourself.

Until then, I can’t wait to see what Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs come up with next week!
