It has been said success is a terrible teacher. As a result, the best leaders raise the level of urgency with successful teams. They often get tougher, increase tension, and raise the level of urgency. Otherwise, successful teams can default to assumption and “take their foot off the gas.” As a former company president used to say to me often, “Quit reading your newspaper clippings!”

In the February 3rd NFL Countdown feature shown above, ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio asked Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni about staying focused as the team prepared for the NFC Championship and potential Super Bowl. Coach Sirianni said, “We get to the play-offs and you don’t change the message.”
