A Frequent Question

I am often asked by pastors and church leaders what is needed to have larger platforms and increased influence.  The advice I give them is to not pray for a larger platform and increased influence, but rather to pray for greater faithfulness and consistency in their private life.

Then, if God chooses to give you a larger platform, the foundation of faithfulness and consistency in your life will be able to sustain your platform.

As a society, we over-celebrate public success and under-value private faithfulness and consistency.  It is the process of daily discipline that brings success, the lonely work no one sees but everyone cheers for when put on public display.

A MVP Candidate

Joel Embiid, the Philadelphia 76ers superstar center and one of this year’s Most Valuable Player candidates, understands the value of consistent private faithfulness.

In this March 27, 2023 article written by Shams Charania via The Athletic, Embiid told the Boston Celtics Jayson Tatum, “If I got any advice for you, don’t focus on MVP.  Just focus on the right things, which is winning games and dominating.  Whatever helps your team win, that’s what you should do, and then everything will take care of itself.”

He concluded by saying, “When you worry about the right things, which is winning basketball and doing whatever it takes — whatever happens, happens.”

An Important Lesson

Embiid gives leaders a great lesson.  Don’t focus on winning a MVP award, or gaining a larger platform.  Your primary focus should be doing the right things every day in practice or at your place of employment.  Awards, notoriety, and success take care of themselves when daily excellence is prioritized.

Once again, private faithfulness and consistency should be your focus.  That’s how the most successful leaders …. and potential MVPs think and perform.
