Favor isn’t always fair.  There are some benefits reserved only for a select group of leaders.  One such group are those who pay great attention to detail.

2 Important Quotes

I read an interesting quote by writer Paul Dehner Jr. in this article from The Athletic, “True longevity in the NFL isn’t about talent level.  It’s about the grind, the willingness to sacrifice, tricks of the trade, appreciation for the details that help teams win.  Traits inherent in undrafted success stories.”

Dehner’s statement about the importance of details caused me to revisit Nebraska Cornhuskers linebacker Luke Reimer comments in this HuskerExtra.com article.  He said, “(We need to) do every single little thing right, like detailed to the max and worried about every little thing.  That’s when you get over that hump.  You’re doing the right thing, you’re doing all these little details.  That’s when the ball will start bouncing your way.”

After reading Dehner and Reimer’s comments, I gleaned the following six advantages for leaders who give great attention to the details:

Attention To Detail Helps Give You Longevity

Making a big deal about small details shows a commitment to excellence.  It helps you learn “the tricks of the trade.”  As a result, you become more desirable to your organization and results in your services being in greater demand.

Attention To Detail Can Make Up For The Difference In A Lack Of Talent

Having an attention to detail allows you to catch up and even surpass those who are more talented but careless.  Reimer said, “We’re chasing greatness.  Everyone here is sprinting to stay ahead of us.  We’ve got to catch them and then get to where we want to be.”

Attention To Detail Shows Greater Commitment

Being attentive to details does not happen by default, only by design.  It requires focus and intentionality.  As Reimer said, being attentive to details is something you “need to do.”  Everything matters.

Attention To Detail Is Only For Those Prepared To Pay A Higher Price

You must forego being casual.  Reimer and his teammates are “worried about every little thing.”  Attention to detail requires sacrifice, and those who are willing to pay it stand out.

Attention To Detail Leads To Greater Team Success

During the 2021 and 2022 seasons, the Cornhuskers lost 14 games by single digits.  Before you can learn how to win, you must first learn how not to lose.  Being attentive to details limits mistakes and positions the entire team for victory.  The games you previously lost by one score, you will now begin winning by one score.

I’ll be keeping an eye on the Nebraska one score games this year to see what a difference Coach Matt Rhule and his staff are making.

Attention To Detail Leads To Greater Personal Success

Luck favors those who are the most detailed.  The ball starts bouncing your way.  If you are not experiencing the results you are hoping for, start by making a big deal about the small details.  As you can see by the picture below, the difference between winning and losing is often in the details.

Conclusion

Longevity, making up for the difference in talent, commitment, sacrifice, and greater team and personal success.  These are reserved only for those leaders who pay great attention to the details.
