No one likes change but a baby.  This is an old leadership saying.  But as a new grandfather, I have learned babies do not really like change either.  My granddaughter cries through diaper changes on a regular basis.

The following are five stories which causes leaders to ask a specific question about the subject of change:

Killer Whale vs. the Great White Shark

Since the movie Jaws, many people have thought the great white shark is the apex predator of the ocean.  But this long-held belief and traditional thinking has proven to be false.  See the video below of a recent encounter between a great white and 60-year-old killer whale:

Many people have traditionally thought the sea’s apex predator was the great white shark.  However, new video evidence has changed our thinking.

What long-held beliefs do you have that should change because of new evidence?

Japanese Diapers

Unicharm is the largest diaper company in the country of Japan.  Its annual revenues exceed $2 billion.  But they are making a significant change due to nation’s quickly changing population.  Last year, Japan had its lowest number of births since 1800’s while their over-80 demographic grew more than 10%.

Therefore, Unicharm is getting out of the baby diaper business and pivoting to the adult diaper business.

Business leaders, what is the data telling you about what needs to change in your business model?

Beyonce the Country Star

The past week Beyonce released her first country album “Cowboy Carter”.  The previous month she became the first black woman to top the Billboard country music chart with the song “Texas Hold ‘Em.”  So why is one of the world’s biggest stars changing to this specific genre?

In 2023, streams of country music increased 23%.  Other artists are switching to this style as well and want to get in on the action.

Leaders, how should you change so you can increase your influence and impact a larger group of people?

How To Get Rich

Who do you think made the most money in the San Francisco Gold Rush?  Believer it or not, it was not the small number of miners who found gold.  It was actually businessmen like Levi Strauss and Samuel Brannan who sold supplies like picks, shovels, pans, and dry goods.

Zig Ziglar was right when he said, “You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help other people get what they want.”

Leaders, are you changing your focus from getting rich to helping more and more people reach their goals and objectives?  I think you will earn a very good living while doing so.

What Are The Key Contributors To Success?

Speaking of success, the following is one of my favorite scenes from the movie Moneyball.  The video depicts Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane, played by Brad Pitt, attempting to help the team’s scouting department develop a new definition of what makes a player valuable.

Adapt or die.

As you have seen, disrupters like Beane are always met with strong resistance.  New Boston Red Sox owner John Henry confirms this in the video below:

Leaders, are you disregarding traditional thinking or are you a dinosaur?  Are you adapting or dying as an organization?
