Successful Leaders Invest In Good Ideas

How much is a great idea worth?

On March 30, 1867, the United States purchased Alaska from Russia for the shocking price of $7 million, approximatley 2 cents per acre.  The response to Secretary of State William Seward’s brokerage of the deal was harsh.  Some of the responses were “Seward’s Folly” and “Seward’s icebox.”

On April 1, 1976, Apple’s Steve Jobs bought out Ron Wayne for $800.  Wayne was one of the company’s three original co-founders along with Steve Wozniak.  Wayne created the famous Apple logo.

Leaders, what ideas are you investing in today which could yield exponential returns tomorrow?

Successful Leaders Invest In People

People are the only appreciable asset any organization has.  Everything else depreciates… but not people.

In Bruce Feldmon’s latest NFL mock draft from The Athletic, one NFL executive said of Michigan quarterback and presumptive top-10 pick J.J. McCarthy, “I think too many people are getting caught up trying to look at box scores instead of watching film.  He makes a lot of plays for them after the play breaks down.  There’s some ‘wow’ stuff in there.  He’s on a dead sprint, and he makes some perfect throws.  When he has to get out and make a play, he can really do it.”

When evaluating the people on your team, are you focused more on what they can do, or what they cannot do?

Successful Leaders Invest Time In Building Trust

Former Minnesota Timberwolves guard Austin Rivers said the following about the team’s center Rudy Gobert in this article from The Athletic, “We trust to hit him in the pocket.  We trust when we call a post up we trust he gonna catch it and do his thing.  Catch in the pocket, make the one more (pass).  Trust him at the free-throw line.  Just little things like that, it goes a long way.”

In 50 words, Rivers used the word “trust” on four different times.  As of today, the Timberwolves have the best record in the Western Conference at 53-24.  Trust is vital to a team’s success.

Leaders, what are you doing to build trust in your organization?

Successful Leaders Invest In Practice Time

You will either prepare or repair.  Your public success is determined by what you do in private when no is watching.

In the video below, Iowa superstar guard Caitlan Clark said, ““The biggest thing is coming in and being intentional about every single thing we do, no matter how long we go on the court.  You have to win practice every single day if you want to win on game day.”

Leaders, do you invest more time and effort in practice than you do the game?

Successful Leaders Invest In What Never Changes

I cannot recommend enough you purchase Morgan Housel’s book Same as Ever: A Guide to What Never Changes.  In it, he shares an incredible story about Warren Buffett from 2009 during the peak of the Great Recession.

A fellow CEO was wondering how we would come through the financial crisis.  Buffett asked him if he knew what the best-selling candy bar was in 1962?  It was Snickers.  What was the best-selling candy bar in 2009?  Snickers.
