What do you need to become your organization’s top performer?  The answer may seem odd but you need P.E.A.C.E.  Let me explain.

Passion + Education + Attitude + Curiosity + Elite Skills = Top Performer

I recently interviewed an organization’s top performer to learn some of the traits which made her such a success.  As she began to unpack her systems, processes, and approach to her job, the PEACE Plan came into focus for me.

The following are the attributes which make up an organization’s top performer:

Passion

When I asked her why she produced such superior results, her first answer was, “because I love my job.”  A person with passion does not need an alarm clock.  They rise early ready to attack the day.

Passion is also owning the result.  It is doing whatever is necessary to satisfy the client.  A passionate person goes beyond 9-to-5.  They take calls and respond to emails late into the evening.  Why – because that is what the customer needs.

It is not a job, but rather a calling.  They hustle.

A person with passion then does the following….

Education

As an employee, who is responsible for your personal growth and development?  It is not HR, or your manager, or someone else in the organization.  It is you!!!

A passionate person works incredibly hard to master their craft.  They seek out training, read books, attend conferences, get coaching, and do whatever is necessary to get better at what they do.  Why – because they own the result and their own personal development.

Attitude

John Maxwell teaches that your attitude will determine your altitude.  Attitude is also the great separator.  If you must choose between two equally skilled people, you will always select the one with the best attitude.

When you take passion and education and mix in a positive attitude, you can begin to accomplish great things.

Not only do top performers love their job, but they also love their customers, organization, and the culture they are a part of.

Curiosity

A person who is passionate, equipped, and has a great attitude will then begin to ask great questions – lots of them.

The quality of questions a person asks is an indicator or their maturity and insight.

The person I interviewed was a master question-asker.  She probed and sought to have a greater understanding.  This allowed her to have a deep understanding of the customer’s needs and subsequently serve them with excellence.

Elite Skills

This is where it all comes together.  You take a passionate person who goes the extra mile to fully-equip themselves.  That person then has a great attitude which allows them to reach their full-potential.  Then their curiosity comes to the front and through great questions discovers what is needed to best serve their clients.

They are now elite performers.

Average or Below-Average Performers

After talking with this elite performer, I saw what made her so successful and why others do not achieve that level of performance.

It was P.E.A.C.E.

They simply lack a love for what they do, they don’t own the result.  As a result, they have not fully-equipped themselves.  Frustration or failure ensures which can lead to a poor attitude which then harms curiosity.

If this describes you, start by rediscovering your passion or find something else you love to do.
